Hold comments....20 pics.Pic 1:  So I built legs for my lathe table but there’s a lot of unused space underneath.  Decided to build a rolling tool chest/fab table.Pic 2:   Raw material ready to go.  1x2x11ga rec CS,  100lb full extension drawer slides (KV8400 22”), 4” 500# rated locking casters (Caster City 9AMG4x2-ML).  Not shown is 18 ga sheet HR P&O sheet metal sides and back.Pic 3:  Table top is 41” x 36”x1” thk A36 plate.  CNC o/a cut w/ 2” corner radius…very straight and smooth.  Supplier is Cyclone Steel in Houston.  Great service! Reply:Pic 4:  Table top corner detail.Pic 5:  Drilling the holes for the clamps…35 total.  I was a little worried about setting this 300 lb plate on my mill but it turned out to be no big deal.Pic 6:  All holes drilled and tapped.  ½”-13.  The drilling was easy but the tapping was all manual…PITA. Reply:Pic 7:  Rec tubing cutPic 8:  Tubing clamped and ready to tack.  I’m using the unfinished top as a temp fab table.  It’ll be nice when I don’t have to kneel on the garage floor to do this.  Also using the step clamps from the milling machine…working out great.Pic 9:  I bought this clamp at Northern Tool.  Around $40.  Very nice for right angles.  Wish I had three more. Reply:Pic 10:  Frame all welded out.  The tubing was, I think, poor quality from a local supplier (not Cyclone Steel).  Lots of surface rust and mill scale.  I couldn’t find any tubing in P&O so I used what they had.  Lot’s of work getting it ready to weld/prime/paint.   Do they even make rectangular tubing in P&O?Pic 11: ¼” caster mounting plate…weld detail.  Miller 211, 60 ipm, 5 volts, .030 ER70S-6, 10 cfm 75/25 ar/co2.  I need way more practice but it’s getting better all the time.Pic 12:  Drawer sheet metal.  16 ga HR P&O sheet steel.  Decided to get a local sheet metal shop to bend the sides and shear the ends.  I’ll weld these myself….saves money. Reply:Pic 13:  Drawers all welded up.Pic 14:  Detail of drawer weld.  Tigged these using a 200DX, DC, no filler, 70 amps, pulsed at 2 pps.  I love that 200DX.  I’m not very good but still passable for a rank amateur.  Also, welding on nice clean shiney steel makes the a difference.Pic 15:  Another drawer weld detail.  Got a little hot at the end…opps. Reply:Pic 16:  Drawers, frame and sheet metal all primed.  Used PPG ShopLine black epoxy primer and a $40 Harbor Freight HVLP gun.  This is the first time I’ve played with automotive paint since the late 60’s…no kidding.  Back then it was acrylic enamel and the stuff was cheap.  It’s not cheap anymore.  The primer was very easy to shoot and layed down flat.  A few runs but that’s OK.  Next time it’ll get better.Pic 17:  OK!  Here she is.  Got the top Blanchard ground at a local shop.  WOW!  She really shines.  I know it won’t last long but I’m really enjoying it for the moment.  The paint topcoat is PPG ShopLine JAU 2K urethane.  Here again, I’m seeing orange peel and a few runs but for this project, I’m delighted.  I need more practice with the HVLP gun but it’ll do for now.  The isocyanate hardener scared me a little but I used a half-mask respirator and 3M “pink pads” and never smelled the paint.  I found that the 3M leak test instructions don’t really work.  These things take a little fiddling with to make them seal right.Pic 18:  View of the back.  Cover is removable .  Used thread-rolling screws for the sheet metal and drawer slides.  They cut right into the 11 ga tubing and made perfect threads. Reply:Pic 19:  Table/chest nestled underneath the lathe.  My welding cart is next door.  BONUS FEATURE…jack up the lathe legs slightly and slip wood blocks between each table top corner and the lathe bench, lower the jacks and the use the table to roll the lathe around….works perfectly.Pic 20:  A couple of tools that gave it all in the making of this build (OK…I guess I shouldn’t have used a cheater bar on the tap handle). And that's it.....Thanks for looking. Reply:That is pretty cool project and it turned out great. The pink filters are not good enough for isocyanates. I have done my fair share of spraying without a mask even but one should really at the minimum be using fresh charcoal filters. I picked up a decent keyless chuck (spi brand) for my mill and never looked back. They are so smooth, and I can within a second swap from starter drill bit to bigger drill bit and then to a tap and power tap. I can drill and tap a 1/2" hole in less then 2 minutes. Enco usually has these on sale for around $70. Not sure if you have that setup but for anyone with a mill it makes life nice. Anyway cool project.Millermatic 252Lincoln 175 plusTA 185tswTA 161stlhypertherm pmax 45Victor torchHenrob torchAn S10 for each day of the week

Reply:Nice, it all fits together rather nicely. Looks great, really like the look.Good judgement comes from experience.Experience comes from bad judgement.
Reply:nice job!  I like the idea of laying out a series of holes to use for clamping, fixtures etc.....do you have any type of "shield" under the top so sparks and dust dont enter the drawers, awesome job!!
Reply:I put a piece of 18 ga under the table top to keep stuff out of the drawers.I also added 1/2-13 set screws to all the holes to keep 'em clear of chips and stuff.Miller 211 w/ spool gunMiller Dynasty 200DXLongevity 60i IGBT plasmaO/A w/ crappy chinese torch/gaugesSouth Bend 10K latheGrizzly 4029 10x54 millGrizzly 7x12 hor bandsawangle grnders, bench grnder, bench belt sndr7.5 hp 80gal cmprsor

Reply:Awesome great project. I really love the way you've integrated the shop together, welding cart, welding table, lathe bench.  I can't imagine what that would cost if you had to order it built by someone to spec..   Nice, really nice job.  thanks for sharing.Question on this photo:It looks like you made three seperate frames (left, center, right), then welded those into the assembly. After welding, filed everything flush.  How did you do the horizontals?  Did you use short square cut pieces?  (or is that the really fancy three way miter corners?) The horizontal top tubes and bottom tubes are in perfect alignment! How did you do that?  I never get them EXACTLY perfect like that!  It looks like one solid horizontal tube.   Nice work!
