I was wondering if anyone could give me some insite. I can lay a slick as glass t joint tig bead, but when I try to run a butt joint or even just a bead on a flat plate, they turn out all grey and not smooth . I thought t joints were suppose to be harder. Thanks for any insite, that my help. I am using 2% 3/32  308l filler and 15cfh. Thanks
Reply:Are you welding 304 SS?If so, a grayish colored weld means you're running to hot or possibly traveling to slow causing heat build up in the base metal.A T joint requires more current then a butt joint, so if you're trying to run the same current setting for the butt joint as the T joint try turning amperage down for the butt joint.Still assuming the base metal is 304SS what color are your T joint welds turning out.Last edited by Dan; 07-23-2010 at 02:07 AM.ESAB Migmaster 250 Hobart Ironman 230Multimatic 215TWECO Fabricator 181i & 211iHH125EZ - nice little fluxcore only unitMaxstar 150 STH - very nice
Reply:I  am not sure the ss, it is some scrap i found. The t's are shiney with a nice color on the sides. It is around 1/8 what would be a good amp. I am running 106 for the t's thanks for the help.
Reply:If you have a foot or hand remote control, setting the amperage control dial on the machine to 75 amps would be a good starting point.ESAB Migmaster 250 Hobart Ironman 230Multimatic 215TWECO Fabricator 181i & 211iHH125EZ - nice little fluxcore only unitMaxstar 150 STH - very nice

Reply:I didn't know if they were better. I like how you can see through them, but didn't know if they would effect the weld. Thanks. I am running a number 7 would i be better going to a 4 or 5. I  buy my own gas or is there not much of an advantage going smaller, other than saving gas. I have tried a gas lense and it seemed decent. Thanks

Reply:thanks. one more question, what is the difference between a 17 and 9 torch, for ordering a gas lense? I have a 9. Thanks for all the help. Is it wrong to hijack your own thread?Last edited by mark123; 07-23-2010 at 03:29 AM.
