This may not be the proper catagory to post this thread but I figure its probably the most veiwed and would be where I get the most feed back. I am a young enthusiastic welder. I have been in the industry for roughly 3 years now. For the last year and a half i have been cutting my teeth in down and dirty old school boiler shop.(the only reason i say dirty and old school is because the place has not changed nor upgraded in the last 40 years or more and half of it is a dirt floor.) That being said I honestly love the place and deffinatley do not mind getting dirty. Afterall im a welder arent I. My biggest problem though is that I have a willingness learn it all and learn it fast. I have become a substantial asset over the last year and half with my stick welding abbilities(carbon steel, chrome, stainless uphill, inconel, and monel). I have also tig and stick tube welded on nearly every heat exchanger we have had since i have been there. Now it is time for more though I am greatly interested in the sub arc and tig drop throughs but for some reason that i can not figure out I am being held back they would rather waste there time on older 40 somethings that couldnt run a power drill let alone a sub arc. Then ask me to cut out their repairs. This just has me at my whits end and im beging to think its time to move on. Maybe to a another vessle shop or the pipelines which have alway interested me. The only problem I have with the piplines is the downhill portion and having your own rig. I can stab a 6010 in without a problem but its the downhill fill and cap that I dont have a clue about. So I suppose my question is what do I do now? I am willing to devote my time and mind to a company or person that is willing to teach me and let me learn more, but where do I find that? Am I asking to much? I know that i am young but as long as I am reliable and trustworthy I cant see why you wouldt want to invest the time and knowledge into me.I guess I have ranted and pouted enough for now. So any feed back from you guys on here would be more than appreciated. I dont know maybe im b**ching about something I shouldnt be and should just be happy to have a job. I dont think so but let me know what you think please.
Reply:"Then ask me to cut out their repairs."There is a lot of character building in the willingness to do the grunt work. It takes skill to do the cutouts and prep, so do it well. Hard to teach a skill in later years when it has not become second nature to you. You could end up becoming those you despise. I would not depend on them to train you. Just like joining this forum and gleaning all the info you can helps tremendously. At 21 you think you have the tiger by the tail, but believe me that tiger has big teeth. Better to become friends with that tiger. How much they paying you?Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.
Reply:My Brother, my friend and myself are all in our sixties. We have gone through the 70's, 80's, 90's and more. The business world will never been the same. However, we've all managed to hold onto our jobs.If you can "bow" to the one giving the paychecks, and say "I'm not worthy O' Master", making the boss look good will give him a every reason to keep you. And, even when/if you get your "own" business, remember the customer "IS" always right.Pete
Reply:What these guys are saying might be a hard bead to lay down (pill to swallow), but it makes sense.  I don't know that I'd be able to hang it there, feeling like you do.  I worked at a fab shop for a while as a sawyer, and did the job quite well.  The foreman and production manager were just ********s.  I only lasted there about nine months.  Had my job nailed down way better than the fuKK I replaced, and DID keep my mouth shut, but the production manager came out to me one day and said "Its not working out, and handed me my walkin' papers."  I didn't fit in there.  Simple as that.  The business was successful, and they got there doing what they've been doing, the way they've been doing it, since the early 70s.  Sometimes, it just doesn't matter what your skills are.  You gotta fit into the groove.  Sounds like you're looking to hop out of that groove.  Keep your head down, and come up with a plan, then move on.-AaronJet 17.5" Drill Press1942 South Bend 16x84 Lathe1980s Miller 320A / BP --- 2013 Power Mig 2562012 Jet 7x12 Horizontal BandsawVictor O/A Setup

Reply:terry to answer your question first off 19 hr.well guy i guess something has paid off or somone has noticed started training on the sub arc last night and completed my first two long seams. Ive realized i just need to slow down a bit and let the learning side of the buisness and life more roll into place as appose to trying to kick it into overdrive. dont get me wrong i think eagerness to learn  goes a long way in this world and with some people but sometimes you just need to let the card fall where they may and see how it ends up for which is kind of what happened in this situation. one day i was bitching about not being taught something then two days later i was offered to do it. thank you guys so much for the advice and im sure it will help greatly in more situations than just this one.

Reply:frustration and whining are two very different things man. We deal with it on a daily basis. I know guys that would kill to be in your shop, me being one of them, hah, just gotta take er easy. I cant tell you how many welders i know that have left the trade because they didn't care enough to get better or practice or didn't have the gumption to eat a little **** to get into better jobs. welding is totally all about confidence. I fell apart on a job about 2 years ago. my machine was giving me fits( bobcat 225) i was alone on 4-5 bucks of scaffold,6 bucks wide, building a containment wall for lions. all 6" sched 80,and 4 " sched 60. I honestly thought i forgot how to weld for a week, hah.
