A lady wanted me to make her a gate and she wanted to design it. I'm good with that. I went to her house and took the measurements. Then she came to the shop and drew the gate on a piece of 1/8" plate. It wasn't very exact but she said that was the way she wanted it. She did a pretty good job for free hand. I cut it out with my 65 year old Victor torch and finished the gate. It has a custom blended powder coat finish that looks like rough textured rust. The powder coat guy did an excellent job. It all turned out well. Attached Images
Reply:Looks nice.
Reply:Really sharp!  Excellent job! For free hand that is outstanding.
Reply:That looks great, good job!Buy American, or don't whine when you end up on the bread line.
Reply:Looks very nice and original, usually you don't want the customer involved in layout but in this case it's fine. lot of cutting for the old free hand torch, did you get a lot of warp and then have to massage it back to shape. also what did you use for a grinder  to smooth it all out , lot of tight placed to finish."Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251   Syncrowave 300   30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200   1 short hood    SA250    SAM 400
Reply:Good job on the layout and the cutting.  How did you keep it from warping, and could you post some close up shots of the latch?  I'm trying to figure out how it works. Thanks

Reply:Nice job, man.  I really like it!(Retired) Professional firefighter, amateur everything else I try to do...Oh yeah:  Go Big Red!   (You know: one of the 12 members of the Big 10 cuz we left the 10 members of the Big 12...)
Reply:There was just a little bit of warping but a solid whack with a hammer in the right places straightened it right out. It was 1/8" and I used a 3/0 tip so there never is much on 1/8".For grinding I used a regular 4 1/2" angle grinder and an die or end grinder but there wasn't a whole lot of grinding to do. Most of the small holes didn't get ground at all. There was one I buggered up some and I used a Dremel tool on it. Took a while though.I'm going back in a couple days to get measurements on another project for her and I'll try to get some close ups of the latch for you Cajun.
Reply:Thanks, I would appreciate it.

Reply:Cliff, the lady that this gate was for sent me the pictures as her's were better than mine. She has a gardening blog called Great Stems. You can google it and see all the pictures. The latch is just a leaf spring latch with the spring made out of 24" of 1/2"x3/16" flat strap. Here is a picture of an older one on a gate at my house and one on this gate before it was coated. Attached Images
Reply:I like those kind of latches and I like your scroll detail on it. Wanted to do one like that, but with dog bones instead of scrolls, on this one I did for a client, but the budget wouldn't allow.http://www.wingnutdesigns.com/galler...teTrellis.html200amp Air Liquide MIG, Hypertherm Plasma, Harris torches, Optrel helmet, Makita angle grinders, Pre-China Delta chop saw and belt sander, Miller leathers, shop made jigs etc, North- welders backpack.
