I was driving down the road and came across this welder sitting on the side with a sign saying free. My wife popped a gasket when I picked it and brought it home. She said I don't need another welder but I couldn't leave it there.Anyone have this welder? I've seen these around but I have never used one. I think it was made by Century for wards. After cleaning it out and freeing the the shunt block I plugged it in and it works. The stinger needs to be replaced along with the ground clamp but over all it seems to be in pretty good working condition.Anyone know any info about it.Thanks Attached Images

Reply:kctgb-I got that exact model on CL a few years ago. I like those better than the Tombstone (which I see in the background of your pic) because of the infinite adjustment, and the higher current. The "low" tap has higher OCV and is better for 6011 and 7018.BTW, if you look on the right side of the "lock" lever, you will see a lock nut, which adjusts the pre-load on the shunt block. If the lever is too hard to push down, loosen it; if the pointer moves while welding, tighten it. Oh, and grease all the moving parts of both levers.JohnPS: You mean your WIFE hates it when you find them- you seem to like it just fine. A few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps
Reply:My wife is cool with the free ones, it's the ones that cost money she gets salty about!  Nice find, you get a you suck award for that one. Lol.Last edited by atari; 03-15-2013 at 09:59 PM.

Reply:Originally Posted by weldermikeMy good friend, I thought I was bad, but you really need a 12 step program for welders! LOL, I never seen anybody with so many different types of machines! Love it! But I think I have one that you don't, not competing with you trust me, that would be like going into a gun fight with a pocket knife, BUT! Do you have the GE Farm Welder? Sorry I dont know how to post links, but look for it on youtube 28 minutes long, you'll love it  I had to have one and a friend found one for me
Reply:If your wife complains too much, just tell her you'll be happy to take up a new hobby. Maybe you can pick up stray women by the side of the road instead... .No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:It looks exactly like mine, down to the font on the front, except that mine is lower amperage, and is AC/DC. I agree that it's a Montgomery Ward, but I have seen that exact same design, with different paint and different stickers on the front, under other names.EDIT: I take it back. My heat adjustment lever is a little different than yours. But still clearly the exact same welder.
Reply:Mike, yeah I have a problem, I need to seek help! That Montgomery Wards machine is the first welder I ever bought, late 60s early 70s? I have seen those welders before. In fact every once in a while there is a Miller version of that machine shows up on the local Craig's list. I forget what the guy is asking for it.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:[QUOTE=kctgb;2399051 I might give it to my brother in law to keep at his farm so I don't have to take my welder to his place to fix things. It also has a pretty good set of wheels to move it around and it has a decent duty cycle, 100 percent at 125 amps. This is my seventh welder and the wife is starting to talk about divorce if I come home with another welder. I better cool it for awhile and take her out to dinner at a restaurant of her choice. It won't be cheap.[/QUOTE]I would take the tombstone to the farm and leave the Monkey Wards at the house.

Reply:Yeah, cool old film.I do have a problem with "Glen Beck" being a farmer though. And I had to roll my eyes at how they just popped right out there and began welding on the baler while it was still full of hay.  Would have been hilarious if they had to stop and put out a fire during production of this film. But, this was back in a time where nobody had to be "PC" about anything, and safety rules were few (very few).
Reply:Originally Posted by kctgbIt didn't work when I picked it up. The amperage and locking leaver wouldn't move until I cleaned the grime out of it and greased everything up. I guess the previous owner thought it was junk and not worth trying to fix.
