hey now.im taking the welding certification course at my local union hall (i believe this is the 1/2" class, not sure it starts in sept)...so im just practicing at home using a thermal arc 95s. after im done i cut them in half with my bandsaw. im happy with how im coming along and all but when we learned welding basics in the apprentice training we were using 3/16" rods. im practicing with a 3/32" rod and its a lot harder. i do a lot better with the smaller rod if i just keep saying "little circles little circles little circles". i was wondering if that 1/32" of a difference b/t 3/32 and 1/8 would be too much for my machine to handle? i love this little thermal arc machine. if i need a 220v machine i have access to one at my union hall. i dont know where the thermal arc is made, but i really dont care at this point. my hilti sawzall is made in china and its been drooped from 25ft up onto packed down dirt and still works perfectly.the grand ol' opry aint so grand anymoremiller maxstar 150sworking on an oxy/acet set up
Reply:The diff will be to much for the little machine and you'll be dealing with the rod sticking to much.  You do need to get a 220v machine.
Reply:If you're welding with 7018, 7014 or 7024, you'll need more than 90 amps to effectively run a 1/8" rod.  You can run 1/8" 6010 and 6011 with your 90 amp machine, as those digging rods don't need as high current to run them as the 7018's and other fill rods.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:thanks desertrider...like i said i have access to so many 220v machines and i have a 225v miller thunderbolt sitting in my garage...i just cant get a 220v going in my moms garage because she lives in a condo with stupid rules. i went to go and try to hook up a 220v line in her garage and she doesnt have a master on/off in the breaker. and my apartment is out of the question.the grand ol' opry aint so grand anymoremiller maxstar 150sworking on an oxy/acet set up
Reply:If you want to upgrade machines, the Miller Maxstar 150S inverter dc stick welder runs on both 110v and 220v power and will burn a 1/8 7018 on 110v power.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
