I hope this question has merrit and that I'm even asking an valid question. I'm new to welding and do plan on learning as much as I can with help from great people and forums like this .My question is I want to purchase an ARC welder 250 amps   110v/220v input my understanding is this is a dual input welder at 110v   and  220v   I need to know roughly how many amps I can get from the 110v input .   I have seen another welder at 130 amps max out at  10% 130 amps
Reply:One thing you need to be aware of is what circuit the welder assumes you're on at 110v. Some welders will rate themselves at 110v assuming a 30 amp circuit, which hardly anybody has.Can you post the specific stick make/model of welder that you're considering?
Reply:It would help to know the company and model that you are looking at. Most 110v powered small stick machines top out at roughly 95 amps or so if they are inverters. Transformer machines, maybe 50 amps because they are not as efficient converting input to output power.Top of the line units like my Maxstar 200 will get you up in the 125 amp range, but often they will require you feed them more like 30 amps of 115v power vs the normal 15 amp or 20 amps that's available for most wall outlets. On 15 amps outlets you won't get as much, especially if run on a circuit with other things plugged in and on a long extension cord. The other downside is machines like this are NOT cheap. I can buy probably a dozen nice transformer machines for what my Maxstar 200 cost me used, and I got a really good deal on it as well. You really need to look in the manual. Good companies will tell you what the input requirements are at certain outputs, as well as telling you the max output at what line voltages. If they don't, like many imports do, don't expect great things. use that 90-95 amps as your max on 110/115v power, and even then that might be a stretch..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:It really depends on the particular welder (efficiency) and what size circuit breaker you are using.  Read the specs carefully.  You might find an inverter-type stick welder that will spec 130A output on 110, but that's probably on a 30A outlet. About the best you will get with an efficient inverter with good power factor will be about 100A on a 120v, 20A circuit. If you could mention the make/model, it would be helpful for comparison."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
