For safety reasons I realize that welding across one of these blades would not be a good idea. But what about adding steel to the edge before sharpening. Any one done this before? Reply:Did that on mine years ago.  Filled some dents then across the edge with a tig. Still going. Think it was er80. Still going strong after 15 years.Last edited by shovelon; 04-05-2013 at 09:05 AM.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.

Reply:I do it to brush hog blades all the time. I have a set on a farmers batwing that I used Stoody rod. Not sure how they are holding up. Will know later this summer. I usually just use 7018. Dan
Reply:Well, some blades are heat-treated and have fairly high carbon.  You could end up with a brittle HAZ which could lead to cracking and chipping.https://jdparts.deere.com/partsmkt/d...wer_Blades.htm"USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder

Reply:Mower blades are cheap, your foot, leg, or the person that gets injured is not.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."

Reply:Originally Posted by shovelonMine had dents on the edge, so it was soft. After a resharpen a few times I got mad and added the stronger rod. Material filed readily. If I saw chipping I would not have welded it. The lower end blades are soft and take a stronger filler fine. So far, so good.
Reply:I think everything has been said expect don't weld someones blades.  If you do you may be liable for anything that goes wrong with the blade and causes damage.
Reply:After reading all the comments, it would probably be safe for me to add a little metal from time to time to my blades. I have three large blades on my Kubota belly mower, and the last time I sharpened them they seem to grind off metal faster than when I grind off a 7018 weld bead. Which would tell me the metal is softer than the 7018. Where I live even if a chunk came off the blade, all I'd hurt is a snake or a rabbit. The biggest thing I was concerned about was removing any tempering the blades may have had.Miller Bobcat 250Syncrowave  200Millermatic 252Spoolmatic 30ASpectrum 625 X-TremeMaxstar 150SVictor O/A torchesDewalt angle grindersWelded on/off for over 40 years.

Reply:What kind of cheap *** welds lawn mower blades??
Reply:A cheap-skate who doesn't want to buy a new set of blades once every two weeks after going thru some unseen large rocks hidden by tall grass.   Life is different here in the country.Miller Bobcat 250Syncrowave  200Millermatic 252Spoolmatic 30ASpectrum 625 X-TremeMaxstar 150SVictor O/A torchesDewalt angle grindersWelded on/off for over 40 years.

Reply:Let's do some metric math!55cm long bladeEngine RPM 3000 (might be higher)The end of the blade moves 0.55 * 3.14 = 1.727m each revolutionTotal distance in a minute is 1.727 * 3000 = 5181mIn an hour = 5181 * 60 = 310860m, or 311kph, or almost 200mph.If a crack forms after welding, and an inch or two of the blades end comes flying at 200mph, how much damage do you think it would do to your feet, the neighbours cat, or worse, kids?I like repairing worn out/damaged stuff in creative ways, but there are some things I just wouldn't touch out of safety reasons. I think the american liability "problems" and fear often discussed here when it comes to repairs is borderline ridiculus, but large diameter stuff rotating at high RPM anywhere near the operator or bystanders should not be messed with - the forces involved are huge!
Reply:Make a knife out of it, and for $6 go buy a new blade!I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys

Reply:File a small flat on the blades and they will stay that way longer than a sharp edge.  Also, a 22" blade on a push mower will go through the metal deck.  I've done it twice due to a hub failure.  That mower has been parked since...My name's not Jim....
Reply:Just got to say it!We were brush hogging an old farm, wrapped a piece of fence wire in it. pulled 50 yards of fencing out of the grass!I had an old Simplicity that had no back edge on the blade to throw the clippings out. I welded some steel on them to run for a few years. Most lawn mower blades are a good soft steel hence the reason they bend when you hit rocks or pipes.Disclaimer: I do not doubt that there are high carbon steel blades on higher end equipment.
Reply:Kids push lawnmowers with sneakers and no socks during the summer. WTF is the problem with buying a new blade for 6 Fn dollars! A guy at work wanted me to weld one, and I threw it in the dumpster while I was looking at him. He said why did you do that you crazy bastard, I need that back, I borrowed my neighbors mower and dont wanna give it back Fd up.  Made the situation worse! It was peeled open at the arbor hole. Reply:I used some hard facing rod on my McClane  edger blade.  It worked and I haven't replaced the blade yet.  That was three or four years ago.Hmmmm, hard facing rod......I just got a couple of full spools of MIG wire for next to nothing cost at a mates workshop closure, and amongst the stuff was some Stellite-6 wire.........that's pretty hard stuff to edge my mower blades with......I'm going to cut some out and use it as filler for my plasma welder.Ian.
