I don't know where to post this so I'm giving it shot here.  I think this pertains to some of the pro welders  so I need some advice.  Ok, 3/8 thick steel, 1/16 flux core with 24.0 V and 235 wire speed. How would I go about repairing a 1" gap with no backing plate? And welding uphill, after 3 or 4 downhills, how do I keep my weld from falling out without doing to much weaving. Just remember the second question is for X-ray welds. And yes I have already passed many repairs through X-ray with down and uphill.

Reply:3/8" thick with a 1" gap?  Ummm.....Fire the fitter.My name's not Jim....
Reply:Def fire the fitter.. lolYou want to weld a 1" gap with not much weaving... Good luck.. Right of the bat you have to move at least 1" from side to side..Is this a test? Can you use a copper plate as a backer plate for this repair?  I don't do much fluxcore, but can you try to butter the edges and run little stringers until you can close that gap..
Reply:you can butter the living crap out of each side until they meet and hope for the best.    Other than that your screwed my friendVantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.
Reply:Don't try to bridge it unless you have absolutely no other option. Talk to someone in charge. If possible, cut the tacks and re-fit the parts. That is simply not an acceptable fit-up for code-quality work. If the joint is going to be NDT'ed later, it should never have passed pre-weld inspection. How consistent is the width of the gap?  If possible on thing you could try is using a piece of scrap material, to partially fill the gap. So you end up with basically two welds. When you say "no backing plate"? do you mean a backing plate isn't allowed, or you mean there simply isn't one there? If a back-up is allowed....then MAKE one. When you say 'flux core" do you mean self-shielded gas-less flux core? Or do you mean dual shield?I am not an expert on self-shielded wire settings.
Reply:A 1" gap on 3/8" plate?   Wouldn't it be time to cut a piece to fit in the gap?

Reply:I'm not an expert, but if I were you and can't refit I would cut out a piece and refit a new piece in with proper fit up. The last thing I might do is tell the person who did the fitting to stay away from me.Good luck !!
Reply:Turn heat down slow your ws and go for it.  I had some gaps like that on hand rail I built 2 years ago.  My fitter kind of stunk.  But I filled them... Didn't have excess materials Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk 2
Reply:Thank you for the advice. I didn't know if there was another way to weld the gap up besides pointing your gun down and weaving back and forth. I got it done, but took me forever to get it started. Lol it wasn't the fitters fault, there was a major blow through and all of it had to be ground out, which left an insanely large gap. Passed X-ray after a few cutouts

Reply:No. Someone who ran subarc, blew through the 3/8 thick steel. WHich had to be ground out because of the flux and everything else in the hole. After which left a 1" gap that needed attention. Blow throughs automatically get marked X-ray, so repairing them the right way will get less attention from the chiefs with radios. I did the repair, with took me forever to get started because i have never welded up a gap like this from the floor. I have done less than one inch gaps from the top of the railcar. Which wasnt too bad because i could gouge out the nasty flux.  but all in all, it passed so thats less i hav e to worry about!Cheers!
