I was following up on a web site about the Thermal-arc and was dumbfounded by its low price. Seems it offers a high quality weld for the price. I was thinking of buying mig for speed and would like to do some body work on my truck, and other projects but the thermal arc seems like a good deal. Is the 95s capable of welding a passanger truck frame? Now, why is it a problem to run this unit, or other models on extension coards? Is it because there Gage is not heavy enough to carry the current?  IS there a extension cord that can be used?
Reply:I use my Thermal Arc 185 tig machine with ext cord, using the 240v power from my Bobcat self generating welder.  No problems operating that way.  I use a 8ga 3-wire SOOJ or SOOW outdoor 300v extension cord, which is common stuff as far as 220v ext cords go.  That little 95S shouldn't pull more than 20 amps on 220v power so it should run from just about any 5KW or greater portable generator, or on any 20 amp 220v circuit in a building. As far as welding on a car with a 95 amp dc stick welder, it can do it, with 3/32 rod, if you have the stick welding skills to operate the rod.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:I like to think electricity as water, and electrical wire as a water hose.Once you understand how much electricity can run through a specific guage of wire and the ways of joining the wire, you shouldn't be burdened with limitations that go with the notion of an extension cord.  Probably the cheapest way to make runs of wire is to run them straight from a breaker.  I assume you have a breaker box in your garage. This would probably be similar to what some would call hard wiring something without the conduits.  I don't know exactly what amperage requirements you need, but that doesn't really matter, you can refer to an 'ampacity chart' http://www.cerrowire.com/default.aspx?id=46 such as this one to determine what gauge of wire you need.  Once you know what wire you need, you can run down to a place like home depot and grab yourself 2 or 3 lengths of that certain kind of wire.  Plugging into a 220v breaker is as simple as pie, all you need to be certain of is that the main controlling that entire box is off.  I wouldn't touch that box unless it wasn't hot.  Once you've got the box free of electricity, connect the wires to the appropriately sized breaker.Once you've got things wired up, you can then do one of two things.  What you do next depends on the welder, not all welders come the same, some welders have a place on the back of the welder that is sort of hidden where there are 2 or 3 lugs that you can screw wire directly into.  Other welders seem to use some kind of dielectric glue to hold wires in place, the wires can be joined with other wires various ways, it's another extremely simple operation.  I went down to an ace hardware and grabbed this aluminum joiner looking thing.  http://img844.imageshack.us/i/img2419a.jpg/ Here is a picture of it.  Some people might say that I don't follow the NEC, that's because I don't.  Take that for what you will.If you are going to make that into a sort of permanent extension wire for the welder, I'd use something called oxguard on the wires, it's an anti-oxidization gel.  I'd also be absolutely certain that, no matter what, you either wrap up any exposed metal on the wires with plenty of electrical tape or use a large heat shrink wrap.  You may also want to use a flexible conduit for the wires.I've been connecting my stuff like this for a few years now.Miller 330 a/bp water cooledI believe in gun control, I hold my gun with two hands.  If you want to know why, click here.Buy American or bye America.
