As I use the garage both for woodworking and metalworking, I need all toolsetc. to be closed in cabinets. Since the garage is so small, I need to maketwo cabinets to go on the side walls (too narrow to be purchased cheaply). Was going to do a sketch in sketchup, but haven't got the time - let's see ifI can convey the picture.Cabinet 1:Size:    1m*1m*0.2mUse:     hangs on wall and covers or contains a metal hanging rack - forgot the name  - has holes and hooks to hang things. It's only purpose is to stop dust getting on the tools.Design:     front face made of 20mm*20mm*3mm steel L profile                back face made of 20mm*20mm*3mm steel L profile                back face joined to front face at corners also with same L profile making a box                2 doors 0,5m*1m eachCabinet 2:Size: 2m*0.6m*0.2mUse:  bolted to wall with front side on legs on floor - has a number of shelves forpaint and other "chemicals".Design: shelves made of 20mm*20mm*3mm steel L profile            4 vertical  20mm*20mm*3mm steel L profiles (complete height of cabinet) at each corner of shelves making the box            2 doors 2m*0,3m eachQuestion: If I weld the "box" constructions above, I still need to close up the box/cabinetand add the doors. At the moment I have a sheet of 2,5mm alu (actually a road sign I picked up cheap)and a sheet of 1mm alu. I had thought of cutting up the thin alu for the sides/tops/bottoms,rivetting it on and cutting up the road sign for the doors and rivetting it to hinges (3 hinges for each door) and then rivetting the hinges to the steel profile at the front face of the cabinet.Would this be OK / any better/easier ideas ?
Reply:If my mental image is correct, then I don't see why riveting the thin alu to the outside for sides/top just a dust protection.  though I'm not sure I'd rivet the hinge to the alu instead of the steel frame/box. note; on the hanging cabinet, I would connect the shelves at the corners (F&B) vertically the same as the second cabinet F just stop the angle/L at the bottom of the bottom shelf, and top of the top shelf. This will give you more strength, and allow for future doors to be mounted if so desired. There are no problems. There are only solutions. Reply:Not sure if you got the picture from the words, so here's a picture  - havingproblems with sketchup, so it's a very rough sketch (did it in a hurry so I couldmaybe get comments before monday when I could start some real work .  )As indicated, due to dust etc. the cabinets must be closed. I'd be interested in comments on my design of the steel/"box" /main construction(it may be simple but I have very limited experience, so I'd like to know ifI'm on the right track) + if my ideas on rivetting the thin alu for the sides and howthe thick alu doors are to be attached are OK (maybe other material wouldbe better/easier."BOX 1" will not have any shelves - it is there just to protect the toolshanging on the wall Attached Images

Reply:I thought he posted a thread on these here but apparently he didn't, but here's some like you are describing:http://reference.toolandfab.com/writ...inets/body.htm
Reply:What kind of tools are you protecting? I have a simple wooden cabinet on the wall in my shop and it stays dust free inside and I do create alot of dust at times. Your dimension of ".2m" deep seems very shallow to me; in my world that's less than 8 inches deep So kinda curiuos of what kind of tools are going in a shallow cabinet. My cabinet keeps spray paint, grease canisters, WD40, and other "stuff". I did a quick sketch in sketchup using all your numbers(metric), I can email you the model file if you want it. Reply:markfuga:Unfortunately I need to keep the cabinets narrow due to lack of space but at the same timeI think it will do fine (the small cabinet is just covering tools which are hanging and the largeone is 2m high and will be large enough for storage of all paints/chemicals).Antibling:I must be getting really old - had forgotten about this design:http://reference.toolandfab.com/writ...inets/body.htmThorsHammer's - I re-read your post -I guess you meant that the design of cabinet 2 is stronger withthe verticals - correct ?One thing is not clear - maybe from the blue paint - are those piano hinges mounted on the face of the cabinet under the door - welded to the frame/rivetted to the door
