Hello everyone, my name is Cole. I am 28 years old and I have been a MIG/TIG welder for about 4 years now. I have decided that I love welding and would make a career of it. I have education in welding also because I went to a tech school for 3 years and have learned a  lot about the MIG, TIG, and Stick welding. A brief history of my experience would be as follows. I started out working for a company MIG welding parts for Yamaha, Kubota, and companies like that. I got laid off from there and moved on to a job that MIG welding anti terrorism equipment like steel bollards and ramps that raised out of the ground to stop heavy vehicles dead in their tracks. Work dried up there so I moved to another job TIG welding Stainless and Mild steel check weigh tables. They didn't like that I took as long as I did to prepare a quality product so they let me go after my 90 day eval period. This then brought me to my current job as a MIG aluminum car ramp welder for a very large car hauler company in Georgia. I have been welding these ramps together from scratch (lasers cut the parts I weld them together I mean) for the last 1 1/2 years. I am a stickler for quality in my welds and the position I have now ONLY cares about production and not the quality going out. I am very surprised that half the stuff the guys I work with weld still stays together after they put a car on it.I was watching TV the other day and I seen a show that featured pipe and boiler welders and I fell in love. I feel as if my skills are being wasted and I am not being challenged as much as I could and I would like to make a switch. My question is, with the experience I have, how can I make the switch? Even though I don't have experience in pipe or boiler welding, how can I get a job in these areas where I think my skills would be better put to use? Any advice at all would be greatly appreciated.

Reply:do you have any pipe experience? Take a class at the local tech school, see whos hiring, practice and go take a test? there is going to be lots of nuclear work in our area in the coming years.
