I picked up a harbor freight chop saw and need to get a place for it. So I have an idea and whipped this up last night in an hour or so. The rest I need help with. I want to make a swing arm for this and gets bolted to the wall in my garage. So when I need it, I can just swing it out, use it and slide it back against the wall.I'm 'thinking' maybe a  piece of big square tubing to connect under it and use a bolt, but then not sure how to connect it to the wall. Any ideas would be great. I am trying to get my whole garage cleaned up before the snow comes. After this it will help declutter the garage and I'll get back to practice welding.Last edited by Gamble; 10-25-2011 at 10:21 AM.Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer
Reply:How about using the mechanism from one of the TV stands that folds out from the wall?  You might be able to find one at a recycling center or, I don't think they are that expensive.
Reply:Hi Two thing I would pivot in the horizontal plane so the saw mount will hang vertically.  This would allow you to have more wall support for the weight.  The other thing is put a metal plate against the wall to protect it from flying sparks.Have funTom

Reply:Why not just mount to the wall? If it swings or not, it is still the same amount of footprint. And anything you cut will be in front of it, not behind it. Maybe I'm missing something here.Burt _____________________Miller Syncrowave 250Millermatic 211Miller 375 Plasma Cutter Hobart Handler 12010FtDrillBit.com
Reply:Not sure that I can explain this so anyone will understand what I am saying.... but here goes... Mount, secure a piece if tube material (like what you used) to the wall... horizontally, and attached securely to a couple studs, then use heavy hinges (like door hinge size) to attach your base to the tube mounted to the wall. In fold down position, you want enough room between your base and the wall for two tubes in the vertical postion to rest. These two tubes will be attached and hinged to the wall at the end closest to the floor, and will need to be attached to each other with a piece of tube (basically make an "H" out of tube, mount and hinge the bottom legs of "H" to wall so that it rest behind the base for the saw. When you need saw, lift it up and pull top legs of "H" out to support the front edge of your base. When done with saw, slightly lift front edge of base, push top edge of "H" againist wall and allow base and saw to fold down againist wall.Qualified & experienced at welding scrap metal

Reply:I was playing around last night and put another brace in the middle but not as high for the bolt to come through and put another piece of square tubing on the bottom then a big bolt with some sleeves in it and tightened it down and moved it back and forth a lot. Seemed to work ok but would have to be tightened down a lot. Then I was thinking how am I going to mount this thing and gave up on it. I have another idea. What if I build a triangle stand that hangs off the back a little bit. Weld a rod to it and then use those kind of "U" shaped brackets and bolted it to the wall. Would that work? Reply:I have some 1/2plywod on the garage wall I planned on putting it there and hitting a few studs would help too. But yes I planned on using large lag bolts.remember you can use round stock inside of a square hole or even better round tubing to make it pivot, so weld some tubing to your wall bracket and mount the bracket to the wall.  take you round stock weld it to the table base and then slip it into the tubing on the wall bracket ,  let it extend past the tubing mounted on the wall.....then take a 45* brace and weld it from the round stock protruding at the bottom of the wall bracket to the front base of the table.....the round tubing is stationary and mounted to the wall and the round stock rotates inside the tubing.   maybe make the  brackety on the wall  18" -20" so you will get a nice 45* brace. put your lag screws at the top and bottom of the wall bracket.
Reply:What kind of bracket on the wall do you suggest? I looked at homedepot.com and couldn't find anything.Lose the vertical blue piece and replace it with the red round stock and weld that to a bracket and bolt the bracket to the wall. Is that what you are suggesting? Also I have to admit I'm awful when it comes to cutting angles. How do I know what angle to cut the hypotenuse?Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer
Reply:OOOOOOOOO now I know what you mean. I wish I would have checked but my internet was out so I just started to play around in the garage for a few hours. My original design didn't work because the frame would hit the wall. So after trying many many many things this is what I came up with. It still needs finishing touches for sure.Bottom bracket still needs some work, but I really like your idea. I may go buy some more metal and give it a shot!I really need to get some better drill bits, I snapped another one today. Stupid cheapos. The last 3 pics I bent the rod more and cut out a notch in the 2x4 to get it to sit straight. As you can tell my cheap clamps in the first few pics were just for mock up.Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer
Reply:Those hf drill bits work great. Forgot I had those!Thing project is proving to be a real bitch. Some weld pics. One of those I went over twice. The weld ^^^here^^ seemed to be easy since I just shoved the torch between the round stock and angle iron and didn't room to move much (i used a gas lense and just layed the rod)And test fit number 9287349823749For the top I used 2 lag bolts that came with my wall mount for my tv. Few years old but they have been sitting around waiting to be put to use, go figure one of them the head snapped off. Still have trouble turning to the right and won't sit parallel to the wall but it's a decent fit. I'm exhaust been working on this for a few hours so I'm going to relax and think of some other ways to get this done.Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer
Reply:How are you going to keep the saw still while using it?  Seems like it is going to want to move around while you are trying to saw.__David Hillman
Reply:Have you given any thought to where your hot molten "sawdust" is going?  Forgive me, but I think this is a bad idea.  You would be much better served building a stand to use this saw outside.
Reply:dannyscam would be proud...  you need to rethink this..  think i would put it on a cart so you can use it outside or move it outside if its taking up room while your using the garage..  or put it on a cart with a backstop to catch the debris..tackleexperts.comwww.necessityjigs.comhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/mach...dingequipment/
Reply:I will be putting some sheet metal against the wall. And no cutting outside when it's cold out.Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer

Reply:I share a wall with the neighbor but he can handle it since his sound system shakes my wall on a nightly basis. The other side nobody lives there (we are not joined). Yes I've used the saw a few times and like it lot, I won't be cutting anything that is 8foot long. I actually did put the saw on the stand made some cuts on some 4foot long sections and it worked no problem.Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer
Reply:I hate it when my coffee comes out my nose Please tell me you are wearing steel toe boots and this is just a very rough mock up?!?! Sincerely not trying to be a jerk, but your design skills leave something to be desired and I think you're just going to be causing yourself frustration. Not to mention that's just real dangerous! Downward cutting pressure and a spinning blade....... Hope you wear a suit of armor when using it.Last edited by bert the welder; 10-28-2011 at 11:37 AM.200amp Air Liquide MIG, Hypertherm Plasma, Harris torches, Optrel helmet, Makita angle grinders, Pre-China Delta chop saw and belt sander, Miller leathers, shop made jigs etc, North- welders backpack.
Reply:I was damn near standing on this thing with mock up and it wasn't moving. It will support the weight and the saw only needs very mild pressure unless it's angle iron.Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer
Reply:I'm failing to see the point. Is this to be a "space saver" project? It seems to me no space is being saved with the saw mounted on the wall at the height it's at. Sure you can put stuff on the floor under it, but then you'll want to move that stuff when it's time to cut. I applaud your efforts, but I think the better approach would be a "receiver mount" to plug into the end of your workbech. Then the saw can be tossed up on a shelf (overhead and out of the way) when not in use.
