Hi,I have a 3G open root test coming up and I have to use a 6013 for the root run..why I can't use a 6010 I don't know! 6013 is what I gotta use...I was practicing at home using 1/8th root face and gap!  I keep burning through..each root run looks horrible and is full of slag..I can't stop burning throught...key hole gets out of control every time...I'm using a 2.5 mil rod at about 70 amps dc+!My best results are when I whip the 6013..I tend to be able to control the heat a lot better but whipping a 6013 is never a good idea ..Any advice guys??
Reply:See if you can track down pipe fitter.  http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=19742He is from over there somehwere and is the 6013 master IMO.
Reply:Is there any required setup information?required amperage?vert-up or vert-down?Material thickness and bevel angle?Rod size has to be 2.5mm?I would give it a try - don't think I've ever done that with 6013 before. Reply:Maybe tighten up your gap to 1/16 th?  As soon as you whip you will lose shielding.  You have to run a tight root and bury the rod in the gap as you travel along.
Reply:That's a good point, 1/8" gap does seem too wide for that size rod.Dave J.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
Reply:Yea I should look up flange jockey! He's a genius! So should I use a lot smaller root gap..1/16th maybe and keep a beefy root face 1/8th to absorb heat ? It's a vertical up by the way! The hot pass and cap passes are not a problem ..just the root with this rod
Reply:I played with it some, but I can't seem to find any pictures right now! I run 6013 open root like I do 7018 open root. About 1/16” land, 3/32” gap, w/ 1/8” rod. I like DC straight polarity. You'll have to adjust your amps, and arc force to suit your needs. Here is a inside picture of 6-G open root pipe ran with 7018. Reply:CEP...ur a wizard with a stinger! How did u manipulate the puddle with the 6013/7018 for the root..  Do u just push it in the gap tight and drag it..? Do you weave it over and back into the bevel? What do you do when the keyhole gets out of control?

Reply:It's all about rod angle, arc length, and travel speed! If the joint starts closing in on you point the rod towards the direction of travel, and open the arc length a little. So you can cut the joint back open. If the key hole opens up where you can't handle it, point the rod back on metal already deposited, and close up the arc length, and pray!
