I received the  Millermatic Calculator for mig welding  from Miller today.  I started comparing the numbers on the calculator to the figures in the manual that came  with my MM 252.  There is a big difference.  Mostly in the wire feed speeds.Which one do I go with?  My manual or the Calculator?Or should I play it by trial and error.
Reply:Well the calculator specifically states (on both sides):"Note: ALL SETTINGS ARE APPROXIMATE / WELDS SHOULD BE TESTED TO COMPLY TO YOUR SPECS."So, use the suggested settings and adjust accordingly to get the required results.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!

Reply:What they  said  up there. ^ ^ ^Those numbers are only a guide to get you in the ball park, you have to do the fine tuning to find the sweet spot.I am what I am, Deal with it!If necessity is the Mother of Invention, I must be the Father of Desperation!
Reply:What are the numbers saying?Have we all gone mad?
Reply:I would guess the numbers on the machine would probably be closer.  The guide is probably an average across several models of machine.Dynasty200DX w/coolmate1MM210MM VintageESAB miniarc161ltsLincoln AC225Victor O/A, Smith AW1ACutmaster 81IR 2475N7.5FPRage3Jancy USA1019" SBAEAD-200LE

Reply:The thing you want to look for is wetting at the edges of the weld.  The bead should be relatively flat, with good tie in at the edges.  The edges shouldn't have shoulders, it should be almost as if the bead were an integral part of the base metal.  Very smooth transition.Set volts for "heat", then set wire speed for stubbing or slight variation of "heat".  It's hard to 'splainI always used to, and still do, set the machine to the level where it burns through the metal, then dial it back.  It's a safe way to proceed.  At least you know you have enough heat in the metal, and good penetration. Then you have to consider travel speed, stickout (shortest stickout is best), and uniformity of the bead.  I have good days, and bad days  Seems the bad days are getting more frequent.  It's an eyesight thing"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:In other words, the numbers on the dial are relatively worthless, it's your style and experience that count.  Forget the numbers, adjust for the puddle"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
