I first heard the term 'cracker box' from a friend who offered to loan me his welder. I had no idea what he was talking about I did some seaching here and learned that a cracker box is the same as a buzz box, or a basic AC stick welder. Anyhow, does anyone know where the term 'cracker box' came from?
Reply:I'll bet it started out a "crackle" box because of the noise it makes and was then misheard and translated into "cracker" box - a more familiar term. The Internet doesn't have any information on it that I could find.
Reply:Old GMC cab over engine truck tractors used to be called cracker boxes because of their rectangular shape and the light weight construction used in their build.
