I have a Spoolmatic 30A spool gun. I have used it on aluminum a few times. I have found that for me, with the gun's speed control setting on 2, the machine set to 22V, and the argon CFH set to 30, that it welds well in short-circuit mode. I would like to better understand the wire speed numbers on the bottom dial adjustment. Do they actually correspond to wire speeds? The manual says, "The numbers in the opening are not a wire feed speed and are for reference only." I know I could clip off the wire and try to pull the trigger for exactly 3 seconds and measure, but it would waste wire. Why are the numbers 'for reference only'? Would the optimal setting vary from gun to gun? Week to week?
Reply:MIG with aluminum is a spray transfer operation. Turn the heat and speed up accordingly. You could save a little argon by running 20-25cfh.Yes, the numbers are for reference only as actual wfs of any particular gun will vary based on the actual operating voltage of the machine it's on and actual supply voltage to the machine itself.Recommended voltages and wfs for a given material are to get the operator in the ball park and then fine tune from there to get the bead and weld quality required. Too often operators get hung up on specific numbers when they should be focusing on the result. That's why the numbers aren't specific wfs figures.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:OK, just found out that the 30A dial numbers *do* have a meaning. They indicate hundreds of feet per minute; thus, if you need 375 fpm you dial 3.75 on the spoolgun's dial.metalmagpie
Reply:That just may happen to work out with your machine/gun/power supply running voltage combination but the fact remains:(from 15A / 30A manual )"2 Wire Speed ControlUse control to adjust wire feedspeed. The numbers in the openingare not a wire feed speed and arefor reference only."Still have to use voltage and wfs settings to "dial in" performance as needed for best results.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:any real difference in the 15A vs. the 30A gun (besides price)?
Reply:My 251 displays the rate on the machine, what the gun shows is close but not too close to the digital display. IMHO the 30A is much more heavy duty, and even for the my home setup its properly sized, the 15 is just a toy for the most part. But its my opinion.Syncrowave 350Coolmate 3Millermatic 251Spoolmatic 30A

Reply:Probably spring for the 30A, would like to pick up a good pre-owned if it's out there...
Reply:I found one on Craigslist a couple of years ago for a song. Keep your eyes open one will come up. |
