I bought a used Syncrowave 200 recently and the flow gage on the regulator is broken. I ordered a new one, but in the meantime, can someone with a Smith Argon regulator tell me how many turns to turn in the adjustment screw from the time its stem touches the diaphragm until the flow is 15 and 20 CFH? If I know that, I can get it close and try some TIGging till the new gage gets here. The regulator model is H1957B-580 if that makes a difference.
Reply:15-20 is probably high. If the shop is closed up and no drafts, I run closer to 7-10 but then I run a gas lens most times as well. If this isn't for code work, I'd grab some scrap and run some test beads. I'd give it say 2 turns and run a quick bead and see if you've got decent coverage. If you see signs of porosity, increase your gas a bit till it goes away and then add a bit more as a buffer. If the current setting looks good, back it down untill you start to see porosity and then move back up as suggested before. If it's for code or critical work, there's no solution but having the right tools to do the job correctly.If you are starting out learning, this method will be a bit tougher, and you should expect you will waste gas until you get the flowmeter fixed/replaced..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Smith claims there is no way to determain CFH based on turns, as all regulators vary. Here is a chart with suggested shades for TIG:Electrode Size: 0.020" - 0.040" /// 150-500 Amps = Min Shade 10 / Max Shade 14Again just a suggestion. I prefer 9-10 for 1/16".My rod is hot, and it penetrates deep. |
