Hope this quick sketched pic makes sense...... I'm wanting a backyard fire pit, yet one that takes the smoke up high and away from where people are seated around the pit. Would a design similar to this work sort of like a vent-a-hood in a kitchen, where it would channel the smoke up and out of the pit, or would the smoke probably just boil out from under the metal chimney instead ?The little red lines would be just small rod, angle iron or something to space around the pit and weld the chimney up above the actual fire pit.
Reply:Had something similar to this at a hunting club where I used to visit and it worked well. Very little smoke reached the folks around the fire and only if a stiff breeze blew it out. There will be some heat loss with this design also but it still got plenty hot around that fire!StephenMillermatic 251Miller Syncrowave 200Miller 30A SpoolgunHypertherm Powermax 30Etc., etc., etc.............Cancer Sucks!
Reply:I wouldn't reduce the smoke as much as that sketch shows. you'd want it probably close to about 1/3 the size of the pit itself. if you restrict it to much you wont be getting enough smoke to go up it to create a draft. which is what keeps more smoke going up the pipe. There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger
