Reply:Hey prop-doctor, that's definitely not a skiff! It looks as if they at least had it set-up half way decent for you to gain access to work on it. Am I correct in thinking that this might be a fresh-water craft? If so, that's another plus, if not, then I can sympathise with you immensely. Many of the craft that are around the area where I live have usually seen a lot of salt-water action and repairing the aluminum on them can be a real bear often times. Best regards, Allanaevald
Reply:its  fresh-water  marine growth sucks a little breeze today had some tarping stretched on one side would still whip all around insurance job.. got lub it ... the big truck came all the way from tennesse to pull out the boat just enough room to set under itidealarc 250/250 ac-dc tigidealarc 250/250 ac-dc tig #2 used for sticklincoln sp100hh125dual arbor grinder polisher30 yrs of hand tools52 pitch blocks 6p-26prake gauge -pitch gaugeG&D prop repair 918-207-6938Hulbert,okla 74441
Reply:Looks to me like they need rub bars welded full length down those corners. That size a boat doesnt take much of a stump to hole it.  Mac

Reply:In the picture of the repair, it looks like a small pinhole left underneath on the right side end of your weld. Is that just a dirt spot or is it possible you missed a little spot? Wouldn't want them to put it back in the water and find some seepage after going thru all this.

Reply:Hello prop-doctor, I have long considered building a "knee brace" type of holder for a foot pedal. If you are able to follow me here, I would essentially make it so that I could strap it around my calf so that it wouldn't slide up and down much, incorporate a couple of metal bars that would run down both sides of the rest of my leg to the bottom of my foot and have a place for the pedal to attach so that I could pivot my foot at the ankle to control the amps. Hopefully you can visualize that. I suppose that I should get over having to figure out how to use a slide or rotary control, I'm just too darn stubborn to get away from my trusty foot pedal. I definitely appreciate the challenge on your repair there. Best regards, Allanaevald
Reply:have thought of all kinda things to maybe work the peddle when out of positionhave used allmost thing from elbow, knee, to thigh ,back of leg ,to squeezing like "the thigh master"but still trust the peddle .. when your a tig weldor  you become a contorsionist (?)all i can say it was a change of pace and kinda neat welding on a $$ half million $$ boat best part it was paid by insurance CO. easy buxLast edited by prop-doctor; 11-18-2011 at 08:06 PM.idealarc 250/250 ac-dc tigidealarc 250/250 ac-dc tig #2 used for sticklincoln sp100hh125dual arbor grinder polisher30 yrs of hand tools52 pitch blocks 6p-26prake gauge -pitch gaugeG&D prop repair 918-207-6938Hulbert,okla 74441
Reply:It's jobs like this where the Dynasty 200 DX with a finger control really shine.Easy repair and good money.IF electrolysis caused it, your repair is not going to last.  Considering the cost to haul, I'd probably have recommended a patch applied to a larger area of the hull.Holes created from electrolysis are "very difficult" to repair correctly.  The base metal is generally broken down, similar to the effects of salt water exposure.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.

Reply:Many steel boats corrode more from the inside than outside.  Also corrrosion is greatest in the upper six inches of water where the oxygen is more plentiful.     I agree that a patch would be the way to go but people often don't want to pay.  On one boat I saw built new the inside of the bilge where the bilg pump sat and the water collected was fiberglassed over so that the water sat against fiberglass.

Reply:i have learned that when you are hired to just weld you weld ..if you say the wrong thing to the adjuster  with owner there you will never get a job from the owner again ... i was just guessing here since i can,,,,,an not effect the out come of the job as to what or why like said before no idea what caused the leaks, they were just wide enough to stick my littleswiss knife in at first ..then was cleaned they look bigger in the pic  [ was 2 pin holes and a small crack ,crack was 1/4 long an knife blade wideowner was going to power wash and put a coating over repair  we all can guess what or why,,,,it was not my call to say what caused itthat was between the owner and his insurance manLast edited by prop-doctor; 11-19-2011 at 10:44 AM.idealarc 250/250 ac-dc tigidealarc 250/250 ac-dc tig #2 used for sticklincoln sp100hh125dual arbor grinder polisher30 yrs of hand tools52 pitch blocks 6p-26prake gauge -pitch gaugeG&D prop repair 918-207-6938Hulbert,okla 74441
Reply:Well, you being the Prop Expert and couldn't convince him he needed new props, you probably won't convince him he needs extra material over this spot either. Some people just have more Dollars than Sense. You'll probably be called back in a few years to do this job over, maybe then he'll need new props too, if he don't need them before that time. But he's probably the kind that won't get new props until AFTER getting the lower units of his outdrives rebuilt because of running out of balance props. Then the insurance co. will probably pay for them as well. Even though he could have avoided the lower unit rebuild intirely by running good/balanced props to begin with.He.'ll think the vibration coming from the back of the boat is normal, until the bearings fall out and he ends up getting towed back in.
Reply:prop-doc,Know you do good work, but....I've never let a "non-welder" tell me HOW to do a repair.  I've had to explain my rationalle as to "why" at times, but I've also walked off jobs where the owner/yard wouldn't let me fix it the way I knew it should be fixed.  My "long term" reputation is worth more than any one job.I suspect the "waterfront/marine community" there is a lot like here.  Very small and tight knit.  Screw up a job and everyone in town knows about it before the sun sets.Sounds like you may have even had access to the inside, since it's adjacent to a bilge pump.  I'd want to know a lot more about the job before I just dabbed a bit of filler on the exterior.  Generally, when I see a problem like that, it's just "the tip of the iceburg".If that boat sinks in the next few months (or year), don't think the insurance man won't be knocking on your door.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.
