D 1.8 Seismic Welding

does anyone have any photos or examples of using this code?  earthquake related structural designs regarding welding?  Im curious the changes that are made since the northridge quake and how the design of plating and has been changed to prevent cracking of critical components.
Reply:Here's a summation from Lincoln Electric that was put together for fabricators needing to comply: http://www.lincolnelectric.com/asset...ature/c165.pdfI don't work to D1.8, but a number of the structures we fabricate are to D1.1 with design to AISC 341, which is their seismic Code.  From a fabricator's standpoint, there isn't a lot that's different.  From the Engineer's perspective, a lot of it is additional detail - noting which welds are demand critical, specifying removal areas for attachments/backing, reinforcing fillet welds, beam clip shapes, etc.  From a welding materials perspective, there's also very little.  WPS's are often qualified with impacts (I won't even get on my soapbox there,) but filler material has a not-too-rigorous impact requirement that many off the shelf products can meet.
Reply:I couldnt believe how bad Lincoln wire took the heat for those jobs. I mean I understand it, but that is so much welding cover such a large area.  Crazy what a little aluminum can do.
