Welding mild steel to stainless

What is the best way to weld a mild steel plate to stainless plate?  I've got a mig with standard wire and stainless wire, and a tig machine.Which should I use? This isn't going to be structural; I'm building a safe and want to have some torch protection.

Reply:The "mild steel" part of your question is easy, but there are about 927 different 'stainless' steel alloys (give  or take    ).Some stainless steels are easily welded, some are weldable with some difficulty or 'special' procedures, and some are pretty much unweldable.You really have to narrow it down for us when you say "stainless steel".That said, if you are trying to weld mild steel to something like 'plain' 304 stainless and you really don't care about corrosion resistance, single-pass you could weld them together with mild steel filler or 308 filler or 309 filler.  The best laid schemes ... Reply:Thanks for the replies, guys.It will most likely be 304 as it is readily available here locally, and not too ridiculously expensive (as far as stainless goes).I'm not really concerned about corrosion resistance, since the safe will be stored indoors, and painted internally and externally, plus I'll be using an internal atmosphere dryer.

Reply:I've read 309 and 316 are good.
