I have a piece of 4130 that will be pressed inside a piece of 4140 and i want to weld them together, what filler sould i use and what gas should I use (mix or pure argon)? Also what would be the proper heat treat process? These pieces are over an Inch thick and I am assuming a preheat of 400 degrees would be a good start? But with the shielding gas I assume it will harden and possibly crack later on. I also assume by heating the finished product to 1100-1200 degrees and slow cool (sand or kitty litter) it will anneal the welds? thanks for your help. Also if this was to be done with SMAW what would be the correct rod?? I'm assuming 8018 or 10018.  But how would they handle a heat treat process??
Reply:For stress relieving, I would treat it as a P-4 material:Unlimited heating to 800°F, then a maximum of 400°F/hr to 1100°F, hold for 1 hr/in, cool at a maximum of 500°F/hr to 800°F, then air cool to ambient. ASME Section VIII Div 1, UCS-56, 2010 EditionI have also seen a chart that had heating to 1675°F "for long enough to permit thorough heating" and then air cool to ambient.Use whichever method you have at your disposal and relevant to the quantity of items to be worked.Note: XX18 rods should have no problem with the first process, but I do not know about the second.
Reply:Thank you for the info.
Reply:Grandquads, I need to ask.Is this a bushing to repair something that is worn due to impact or vibration? If so it would be best to just weld all the way.Matt
