You may find this dumb or you may like it, ever notice when you are cutting rusty metal with a torch it pops and the scale jumps off the metal usually down your gloves, Thought I can use this to my advantage. Sandblaster wanted 2 Benjamins to do my dump hoist. I just take the torch with a neutral flame and lightly pass it over the scale. Don't have to heat till red , the scale expands at a different rate then the metal, a light scrape and then a light brush, in 10 minutes I was about a third done. A good brushing and Rustoleum Rusty metal primer will stick quite well. not for auto restoration but for the average impelement works good, no dust, and fast.  First and second picture shows heavy rust and scale and then the gray is how it has lifted, last picture is after a light brushing with a hand brush, note the undone part on the right as a comparison. No power tools used at this point but I will likely use a power wire wheel before painting.  I have used this on truck frames in the past, the steel gets no where near hot enough to do any damage. O/A is not cheap but you don't use much as you are not hitting the O2 jet. Also you can get right into those sharp corners that are hard to grind out.  " Try it , you'll like it" Attached ImagesLast edited by kolot; 11-25-2011 at 11:17 PM."Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251   Syncrowave 300   30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200   1 short hood    SA250    SAM 400
Reply:Neat trick! You saw mine..It's pretty bad right now but that will wait until spring..I will need the rosebud!Just found out my brother is a volunteer firefighter now in Ashford!...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:I started doing that about 6 years ago, it's primitive but saves time, I haven't tried the propane hawk heater , AKA weed burner but that baby really puts out the btus, and the flame is about 2 1/2 inch wide, might hook it up tomorrow.  I think 2 bills to blast it was high, am I getting old and cheap?"Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251   Syncrowave 300   30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200   1 short hood    SA250    SAM 400
Reply:I do that before priming/painting removes moisture from the little crevices you can't get sanding. Vineger and molassis(for cast iron) is also very good at removing rust, if you poor some over an area and wrap it with plastic or if you have drum, barrel or something large enough to soak parts in, just be care full of the fumes. Wire brush the parts rinse quickly and then prime after or they will flash rust very quickly. My welding table gets rusty on the top from condensation and I just poor some vineger over it for the night and wash it off in the morning....nice and clean!!!Lincoln pro mig 180Lincoln Square Wave Tig 300/wp 20/home built water cooler Victor, Purox, Harris, O/A welding/cutting setupsVintage Craftsman drill pressVintage Craftsman/Atlas 12"x 36'' lathe7''x 12'' w/c band saw Everlast 140 st

Reply:I learned this trick on my own in the early 90's. Works good on pitted metal, stops the rust in it's tracks. Wire brush with a grinder and prime soon after cleaning, no need to brush before the flame treatment, only afterwards.I've rehabbed old cast iron skillets and pots using heat as well. Build a beer drinking fire on the ground with hardwood and put'em in after the coals get going good. Sit back with a cold one(ones) while the fire does it's thing. I usually leave'em in there till the fire burns out and retrieve them the next day for final cleaning and reseasoning. If doing several at a time you can ease them out to the edge of the heat a little at a time so they cool gradually and add more cast iron to the fire as the first come out. Add wood as needed to keep the fire going as well as beer to the fire tender to keep him going.

I had a bunch of wrought iron type work to clean up where a a wire brush would have been a PITA even with a power brush.
