Reply:Well let me stat that I am a mig man...certified ? No but my job doesn't need me certified to weld on big trailers that go down the road!!!! So eat it!!! I don't have a big might at home but I got a stick!!! Not new at welding with a stick but I didn't pay attention in class teaching me what the numbers mean!! I was actually looking for a thread that helps a fella out choosing an electrod!!! Thanks for the response I will go somewhere else to gain my information!!!!!miller trailblazer 280millermatic 211millermatic 252maxstar 140thermal dynamics A60miller spectrum 375 x-treme4'x8' burn table inc.175 square wave
Reply:For 1/4 inch thick material, if you have 180 amps of arc welder, I'd go with 5/32 inch 7018 (DC+ on the electrode if you have DC capability) otherwise for an AC only stick welder, I'd go with 5/32 inch 7018AC electrode. If you're limited to say 120 - 140 amps. I'd go with 1/8 inch 7018.  If you have AC only output, be certain to purchase 7018AC electrodes.Oopps...Apply two rules of thumb here for steel1. Electrode diameter for single pass welding = thickness of material - 1/32 inch2. Electrode amperage = electrode diameter in inches x 900Example 1: 1/8 inch thick, single pass = 1/8 - 1/32 inch = 4/32 - 1/32 = 3/32 inch diameter electrode, amps = 3/32 x 900 = 85 ampsExample 2: 3/16 inch thick, single pass = 3/16 - 1/32 inch = 6/32 - 1/32 = 5/32 inch diameter electrode, amps = 5/32 x 900 = 140 amps                 However, here you could use a 1/8 inch electrode at amps = 1/8 x 900 = 112 amps approximatelyReality check:  Commonly available electrodes are 3/32, 1/8, and 5/32 inch diameter. If you are going to weld something thick, like 1/4 inch and don't have a (1/4 - 1/32 = 8/32 - 1/32 = 7/32 inch electrode or big amps = 7/32 x 900 = 197 amps then you can weld with smaller electrodes, with say 1/8 inch electrodes but you will need to weld several passes to produce a weld bead of suitable size.Last edited by Rick V; 07-04-2013 at 12:57 PM.Reason: Assumed too muchRick V 1 Airco Heliwelder 3A/DDR3 CTC 70/90 amp Stick/Tig Inverters in Parallel1 Lincoln MIG PAK 151 Oxy-Acet

Reply:Kinda ambivalent on this one.  I understand where the guy's coming from, and he's no stranger to welding. Look at his signature.  But at the same time, the question he's asking is so.... basic.... so... fundamental....  it's hard not to stare at your monitor and shake your head in disbelief.  And he doesn't even state what kind of welder he's going to use.  AC? DC?   I get the impression this weld will be of a trailer or automotive nature, in which case knowing what you're doing and making a quality weld is life-and-death critical, even if you DO know what rod to use.  So........-RuarkLincoln 3200HDHobart Stickmate LX235TWECO Fabricator 211i
Reply:That is a lot of weight hanging on a weld made by someone unfamiliar with the machine and process. Why not MIG the thing together at work after hours? FFIW I would use 1/8"-5/32" 7018.
Reply:found a chart to help me http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/wiki/El...eference_Charti will be welding this with my trailblazer on dc +. with 7018 1/8" ..weldbead going to ignore that!!!  this will not be going down the road it will be staying in place it will hold a big roll of plastic pipe.could find any crayons so hope u can handle a throw to geather cad drawing not to scale!!!!thanks jake Attached ImagesLast edited by coffinscreekcustoms; 07-06-2013 at 12:35 AM.miller trailblazer 280millermatic 211millermatic 252maxstar 140thermal dynamics A60miller spectrum 375 x-treme4'x8' burn table inc.175 square wave

Reply:Hey, I dont believe you guys. The man just ask a question and I dont think there was many  of you with enough balls to answer him right. In the first place it would be tough enough for an experienced stick welder to weld up this thing with just 7018. I would suggest buying some 6011  1/8 in. and get after it. Why weld something with 70 thousand lb. rod when the iron is 60? Thats a no brainer. Always run a stringer and then if you think it needs 7018 then go for it. If you need anymore help then let me know. Harold

If he didnt know then he could weld it all up with your big thick heavily coated rods with to much flux for a beginner stick welder to use. I will also say that beings he knows how to mig and can turn this thing over  that 7024 would work  in a flat position and be easier.
Reply:Um....what?Are you saying someone who knows how to mig therefore knows how to stick weld?If so, I would disagree on that one.Dave J.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.

Reply:Originally Posted by SquirmyPugJust to add to that, allot of guys that mig don't even know how to set up a machine. They just leave it set where someone else had it then point and shoot.
Reply:I am just saying that a guy that welds no matter what kind of welding can tell what a puddle looks like and can figure how thick his weld is . Knowing how to weld with a different technique  sometimes can be difficult. I just think it takes more practice to weld with lohi than 6011 and get the thing stuck together . He could probably put it together with a torch and a piece of baling wire just as good. He just wanted to know what rod to use.
