I have a propane company asking me to weld together some 3" sched 40 steel pipe and fittings. No problem. Done it before. They are asking for " the proper certs" for the job. But are unable, so far, to tell me what cert they want. Don't think my d1.1 will be enough. Any recommendations ?I don't mind sitting a test. But I'd like to do the right one!!G
Reply:My ASME Sec 9 covers 2" to unlimited, sch 40-160. 3/32 landing1/8 gap6010 root 1/8"7018 3/32" fill & cap.Seems to be the standard round here.--Just looked at my Cert, QW,300- Section IX, tested at .280" Cert is up to .560" Uphill progression only, oops, I burn root down hand from time to time....lol. And Im 2 7/8 to unlimited diameter...Last edited by MadMax31; 01-24-2011 at 09:54 PM.Lincoln Power MIG 210 MP ( boat anchor )Lincoln Weld-Pac 100 HDHobart IronMan 230Cutmaster 42Jackson NexGenSumner Ultra ClampsDWM120

Reply:My procedure is similar to gordfrasers.  I would test with 2" Sch 40 pipe since ASME covers you up to 2x the thickness of the test sample, but only down to that thickness.  You don't want to shortchange yourself. If you need the forms and someone to bend the sections, let me know.
Reply:My D1.1 covers me down to 2" dia. and .125" wall IIRC, sounds like it would fit your bill.  I tested on 6" sch80 Tig/StickHowever I wouldnt even think about doing the job unless they tell you exactly what cert they need, and get it in writing.  I would ask for a WPS, but from the sounds of it I doubt they would have any idea what your talking about.Have we all gone mad?

Reply:update:the pipe seems to have grown to 3" sched 80 !!I just got off the phone from the testing people and:ASME section IX 2 7/8" OUTSIDE diameter, 5/8" wallTig root, 7018 out. 6Gcovers just about anything down to 1" they told me.Ill let you know how that goes for me, in a few months....with pics.( been a long time since i did a pipe test)G
