Anybody weld for the navy(civilian)?

I have the opportunity to jump from nuclear plants to the naval base in Newport, RI. Basically because of the money and just to try something different for once. Just wondering if anyone out there has been a civilian welder working on base before. Not really sure what im in for but it seems EPIC to say the least!I know pay should be more but i dont have a number yet. Its government funded so im sure it will be up there especially since benefits package will be a payout. Also no idea on hours yet. Already did my mig 4g em-1 and tig titanium. Finishing up my certs tomorrow and i have to move out there by next thursday. Knowledge, opinion, basically anything would be great!

Reply:I was waiting for that but not yet! lolSecurity does take about 45 mins in the morning though.... Not as bad as my last nuke plant! Had to be there an hour and 30 mins before just to be on the deck at 7.
Reply:Well, first 14hr shift today. Found out i passed all my certs and they didnt waste any time.  Signed everything, figured out salary, and on to the floor i went.Everyone was very nice. No crazy out of this world rules which actually is the opposite of what i expected. Overall its awesome. It is pretty stressful though....and ive only welded for about 7hrs so far. lol Lots of briefs, WPS's, spec sheets, and its a different thing every day which is cool.Never thought id be building prototypes for the navy!
Reply:Are you working directly with other civilians only or are you also mixed with military on the floor?
Reply:It is mixed. There is another women i work with who is active duty and welds with me. She only does mig though...no tig. She has some stick certs too but she says she almost never uses them. We are currently the only two welders in this division though.It is kind of weird being on base to be honest. Im sure ill get use to it though.
Reply:I was just wondering, I thought maybe you would catch some flak(or even black listed) from the active duty ones for being a civilian.  Hopefully that is not the way it is.
