I am trying to build some tanks to do some bluing on a gun. In order for this process to work correctly there can be absolutly no copper in the chemical solution. Is any of the copper on the welding wire going to remain after it is welded or is it pretty much burned up by the welding? I am also trying to figure out how to make a long propane burner to run the length of the tanks. If any of you guys can help me I'll greatly appreciate it. Thanks.
Reply:Hey allen,I'm a retired Master Gunsmith & waaaaay back in the day, I blued thousands of guns & parts. My tanks were 48"L X 8"W X 6"H & I made my burner with a piece of 1.75" black pipe w/air dampener on the inlet gas feed to set the flame & capped on the opposite end. It was held in place with a 1" steel strap tacked to the bluing tank frame. The pipe was 45"L with #31 drill holes set at 11 o'clock & 1 o'clock looking at the end of the pipe. I used natural gas. You can MIG weld as the copper wash on welding wire is totally consumed within the arc. I used my tanks from 1972-1995 without any issues.....made me nice $$$ back then. Reply:Hey allen,Wow....that was many moons ago. A friend who did furnace work got it for me when I showed him the pipe burner & made & he knew exactly what I needed.
