I have a project where I need to bend a lot of 1-1/4" 16GA square tubing.  I bought a JMR hydraulic bender with a 240 degree die and their one-shot 90 cylinder.  However I could not get a 90 degree bend in one shot and I had issues with the tube slipping back in the die due to the U-strap being very loose fitting.  I was getting anywhere from 78-82 degrees with basically no repeatability.  In addition the original tensioning bolt would easily dent the 16GA tubing and leave pull marks when the tube would slip.  With this vise the tube is not marked or damaged.  I talked with JMR and they offered to fix me up but I decided to give it a go myself.I drew up the pieces for the vise in Bend Tech Pro Sheet Metal which works very well I might add.  It's made with 1/4" HR steel and I cut out the parts on my CNC plasma table.  I didn't have my TIG welder here at the house so I MIG welded it up because I needed to get to work.  All told I have accomplished accurate bends within .5 degrees repeatability because the ram is at it's maximum extension.  I get virtually no tube slippage and I no longer have to pin a U-Strap each time and then tighten a tension bolt.  I load the tube, drop the removable jaw into the vise and tighten it up.  I made the vise with a 3/4-10 grade 8 bolt which I tighten with a 1/2" ratchet. It was a fun little project and works better than I expected.  I had to mill some of the pieces to clearance them for the bolt/nut/bender arm so that the die could be properly pinned.  I also milled the face of the vise jaw with a rougher so it would better grip the tube.  If I have to keep bending this much tubing I'll probably buy a Baileigh RDB-250 rotary draw bender but for now I've cut my time per bend in half with this mod.  At the end is a pic of some tubing I bent and I have a whole scrap pile full of square tube I bent before built this vise that I couldn't use.  I wouldn't want to bend much heavier square tube using this vise but for 16GA the deflection is minimal.
Reply:What size and CLR is that? why did you have to do that?www.performancealuminumfabrication.com
Reply:Very nicely done!  If I may, a couple of questions? There are two cut pieces with a long slot cut in them.  One of those pieces has six small drilled holes.  What are those holes for?  The same two pieces have a slot, underneath the moveable jaw.  What is the function of the slot? And last question, what are you making?  Arm rest table for a couch?Again, nice job...Zip.

Reply:It was a fun little project and works better than I expected. Dang!  That's pretty slick!  Xtremely!Contrary to popular opinion, I do NOT have a pet turkey that craps molten steel.  It's a goose.
