anyone in the 798 ?

most of you know im in school for welding i want to get in to the 798 pipeliners union anyone on here thats a part of that union ? if so could yall give me tips on how to get in i know i need my own rig and im working on that but any advice would be sweet .
Reply:im a welder member or ua lu 322 who does rig work as well all I can post is as follows. your gonna need a few years exp. welding on pipelines. depending on where you live some ua locals share or superceed 798's jurisdiction over distribution, and mainline work, you could always try to join one of these locals as a welder member. another way to get in is sign on with a contractor that may be in 798;s sights for membership and hope they take you in. good luck
Reply:thanks i found the contractors list for 798 there are a few in illinois so basically all i need to do is get on with a contractor and hope for the best ?
Reply:Does your school teach you downhill and API 1104? I mentioned pipeline work to an instructor who I was told did the sort of work before. He told me no less than 10 years of experience, half of that doing downhill. In addition I need my own rig and I *think* some sort of insurance policy. Not to mention a helper. Also that there is more to pipeline work than welding. Heavy equipment operation, rigging, hot taps and tie ins, hot cuts and hot tie ins. Valve maintenance. And a budget because you purchase everything you need to weld. Things may have changed since then. I believe this was 15 or so years ago. As far as getting into 798, a birdie told me it's a very exclusive old boy's club.
Reply:they teach rigging and said if i wanted to run down hill on pipe come in early and my instructor will help me also bend test the coupons after i weld em .my brother hired in the 798 as a helper never seen a welder in his life a pipe line welder picked him up at a bar when his helper quit like a idiot my brother quit with in a year .
Reply:You have to have 5 years verifiable experience to get in the UA as a journeyman. So, either you go in as an apprentice or you work 5 years then join.I started working at a union fab shop a few months back, I just got back in the union last week.

Reply:probably not, you're trying to join a union that deals with pipe, not logging equipment.

Reply:I would get some more hood time in at a local fab shop... Progress in the trade and save for a rig... And dont just burn rod and make pretty welds... Study the WPS and PQR as well as learning fabrication from colleagues... Dont let the facts get in the way of a good resume... But it really should be atleast 60% true... Goodluck brotherSalSal
