I don't have much space in my garage, so I have to build a foldable welding table. Has anyone ever made this before? I know Jack built a foldable welding table that was attached to the wall. I would like to build one that I can take out and put up anytime. It also has to be somewhat heavy duty so I can just put my vice on there when the table is out. Does anyone have any ideas to go about this project? Thanks!
Reply:Unless you're just dead set on building your own (which I can understand), the Strongarm Tools Nomad table is a heck of a deal for around $120.Maybe you could look at that table and sort of copy its design if you already have stock laying around to use up.Just a thought,PapaLincoln Idealarc 250 (circa 1962)Lincoln Weldpak 155 w/Mig KitLincoln Squarewave TIG 175

Reply:depending how tall your garage is I have seen a welding table where it was raised to above head height with a little pulley and cable setup. Worked well for this bloke as his garage was tall. It kept the floor space clean and un cluttered. He had it all wired up so all he had to do was attach the for hooks on each corner of the table and push a button and watch it all raise to the ceiling.

There are no blueprints nor plans, but the pictures are a good explanation of the design.

Reply:If you are looking for the cheapest and easiest way to make a folding welding table I would recommend finding a used Black and Decker Workmate (folding work bench) on craigslist. Take the MDF/Wood top off and find yourself a solid steel plate for the top top either new or used. They have a decent metal frame to work off of and have two work heights.
Reply:how about a 6' tall back. The top would be 2' deep and 4' wide metal plus flanges front an back for rigidity.legs/sides would 4' tall 2' wide that swing in.when folded it would be 6' tall, 4' wide, and just a 4 or so inches deep.the legs would unfold, then the top would lay down on top of them. work surface would be 4' high, 4' wide +, and 2' deep.I think all the structure would be 2x4a. the only metal would be the top and hinges. No reason you couldn't have wheels on the back to move it around easyLast edited by Groo; 12-29-2011 at 08:17 PM.
Reply:i am trying to figure out why i shouldnt just replace my wood tops on my work mate with steel plate and leave the design exactly how it is....i use the snot out of this thing and the size and design is perfect. its over 20 yrs old and has been used for everythng imagineable, since it opens and clamps closed i would still be able to put my big wood top in it if i wanted and the steel plate either 1/4 or 3/8 wouldnt weigh that much so it still would be easily portable. it has holes for dogs and clamps, and since it has two screw handles it can be adjusted so each top is not parallel with the other...... i think i just talked myself into doing this.... i may do this this weekend and report back....i bet yu could pick these tables up cheap at yard sales.bobhere it is beign usedhere it is with a wood top clamped in itLast edited by 37ford4dr; 12-30-2011 at 11:09 AM.bobs77vet/37ford4drEastwood digital TIG200HH190Lincoln Invertec 155sLincoln weldpak 100sears/craftsman (lincoln) 50a 240v buzz boxO/A rig Harris gaugesnexion cut 50 dxchicago electric (HF) 240v spot welder |
