I was thinking of buying a soda blaster. I figure if I do any scrapping I will use one for cleaning rust. Harbor Freight has a couple of sizes. Do any of you guys have one? Can you give some insight about them? Thanks.
Reply:Works so so and makes one hell of a mess.Used mine a couple of times and went back to sand. And yes, it is one of the HF ones. From the desk of Kevin CaronTrying to be the best me I can!www.kevincaron.comAHP Alpha Tig 200x MillerMatic 251Miller Syncrowave 200
Reply:Soda blasting isn't so much for taking rust off as it is for taking paint and loose stuff off. For cutting rust you want glass, carbon, or aluminum oxide.
Reply:The only thing that I've seen a soda blaster do well on was paint removal from fiberglass. It will remove the paint without significantly hurting the fiberglass. I wasn't the owner, or the user. Yes, soda blasting is messy,. All blasting processes are messy, but if you want rapid results it may be the best process available for the job.CharleyMiller MM252Miller Bobcat 225NTMiller DialArc HF / DIY Cooler2 Victor O/A TorchsetsMilwaukee 8" Metal SawMilwaukee Dry Cut "Chop" Saw 5 Ton Wallace Gantry Various Grinders, Benders, etc.
Reply:Thanks for the input. Yes I guess glass would work better for rust. The units will use crushed glass won't they? Seems like I saw a vid using glass. I'm not sure I want to go with the big mess though!

Reply:I know you must of heard this before, But,  Sylicosis is caused by breathing glass dust.  It is not curable. It just keeps getting worse.  It does not take a long time.  It builds up slowly, never going away, Please at least read up on it in the wiki.   Mac
Reply:You get silicosis from SAND blasting Not glass blasting that is why most industry has quit using  silica sand..etc and are now using recycled crushed glassBacked my CATMA over your CARMA oops clusmy me  What would SATAN do ?? Reply:There ya go ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^Because no matter what blast media you use your going to kick up a cloud of dust of one kind or another...even wet blastingBacked my CATMA over your CARMA oops clusmy me  What would SATAN do ?? Reply:And to add my $.02 to the mix: No matter what the media, the debris cloud is going to contain microscopic particles of the substance to are trying to remove, as well as some of the base substrate material you are removing it from. That could generate a cocktail with 3 or more potentially hazardous materials to be inhaled.
