So i've done some projects in the past and havent really had a problem determining how much to charge. Now i have a bid i need to put in and its a very costly project so i would like to know the best way of determining weld cost. Should i figure out how long it take me to do a 1" weld and then take the total weld length of the project and calculate my time for the whole piece or is there a better way? Of course there are a lot of other factors as far as time goes including cool down time, tungsten resharpening, etc... this project is stainless tig 1/4" fillet welds. Thanks peeps Miller Dynasty 200Millermatic 211Instagram?.... find me @ WELD_MEDIC

Reply:figure out how much welding you have, give it a number per inch, figure out how much gas you'll need and add 50% then figure out your hours and how much you want to charge for labor. Line item the quote; materials, labor, consumables, add tax for material and consumables and build in a markup on them as well. If your not making a decent margin on your work it won't be worth it to do. Shoot for 30% profit, an easy way to get there is to mark up your materials and consumables.
Reply:Originally Posted by flux core joeid tell them its cheaper to have them buy material like tungsten's filler rod gas and stainless then id charger a lesser rater per hour say 25 and hour this is simply because all your paying for is your time and electric for your machine now you can choose to do it however you want but this is just an idea to brainstorm
Reply:I always figure the time for the job then added 50% on small jobs, less than 50% if it was more than a day long job, but never less than 25% over. You have to get paid for the time for things like estimating, dealing with the customer, and job prep and cleanup. Mark up supplies at least 30%. 12 years ago I was at a shop rate of $50.00/hr. If your not that high or higher you are going backward.

Reply:Just an FYI, most union erection/welding companies in my area charge around $90-95 per hour for field work on jobs that were not competitively bid (or change order work)
