Please note, If  I work really hard I will get enough experience to call my self a newby. If any of these questions sound like I do not know what I am saying that would be the reason why.   I am putting together an Oxy Propane rig and the next thing on my list is the Victor Propane cutting tip. My question is if I wanted to braze something with propane can I use the cutting tip at a lower PSI or gas flow. I have done some brazing with the "Victor style" #2 and #4 welding tips but I understand that there are issues related to gas mixing from O/A to O/P and that is why you need a different cutting tip. So long rambling question short is if I (who is of limited funds) only could afford the cutting tip, could I get away with doing some brazing using that tip? Thanks
Reply:It all depends on the Nut behind the torch. If you can afford a cutting tip, you should be able afford a brazing tip. I dont remember what I payed for my tips but I do remember the cutting attachments cost more than the torch handles.
Reply:You won't be able to light an O/A tip using propane - or at least it will be VERY DIFFICULT to keep lit. O/A tips for for oxy-acetylene, oxy-propane tips are for oxy-propane (and some other gases too). So buy the appropriate tips.XMT304 (school)SP125+ (home)HF 4x6 BandsawGood judgement comes from experience and much of that comes from bad judgement.
Reply:I think the question is about brazing using propane with a propane cutting tip, using only the preheat orifices. I would try, but not necessarily ar really reduced pressure.  Tips are what they are, and a certain size has a certain flow range."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
Reply:Yes you can use a cutting tip to braze with. You can adjust the gases to get small flames or long flames. You can also move the torch/flame cone in towards the work for more heat and pull it back for less heat. You can even solder with it if you use the flame cone correctly. Pay attention to the base metal and what the braze is doing (puddle). Get some scrap to practice on.
Reply:Thanks for the info all. Insaneride, I have the cutting torch already and the Propane tip is about $18.00. When I said I could not afford both right now that was because I am on a tight budget and if I can use the pre-heat flame for brazing then that would I do. I need to save up for a bigger O2 tank. This is not my job so I can only justify so much spent on it to the wife. Cold1, That is what I thought but I wanted to be sure. I am not going to need to do too much in the way of brazing if I wanted to do some it would be nice if I did not have to change tips. Also I can tell you that (not with out some work) use a "Victor Style" A/O welding attachment with O/P but I did spend at least 1/3 of the time at first getting the flame right.

Reply:As did I, she came all the way from New York State!
Reply:Here is something you can do with propane and oxygen. The propane was from a BBQ tank and my O2 cylinder is a 40 pounder.http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=263091Yep, I am tootin my own horn here.
Reply:Cold1, I got to say that looks good. I guy I worked with was on the project to build a missile silo out west when there was an accident during the install process that cracked the collar that is at the top of the silo. I think the guys said this was cast iron and the vendor said they would have to cast another one. Est time to cast and deliver, 2-4 months. This was sent up the chain and POTUS (Reagan) us not amused.  He told them they would fix this on site or else. The vendor ended up having to come up with a way to build a heat tent around the ring and pre-heat the ring so that it could be welded by men in protective gear. Turns out there were few people during the cold war that wanted to find out with Reagan meant by "or else".
Reply:One other thing about the brass brazing that many people do not know. When people switched from Bronze to Iron (ie Bronze Age to Iron Age) they did so because not every kingdom had a copper mine and a tin mine. Kingdoms would go to war and midway though need more copper or tin and find out they normally got it from the kingdom they are at war against. Bronze is stronger than wrought iron. Not nearly as hard as cast iron but stronger than wrought iron. Since R 45 welding rods are mild steel that would suggest that a bronze braze (done right) should be strong enough for a great many things. The reason people move to iron is you could find it easier than copper and tin and they only needed one  metal not two. Just my 2 Cents.
