What happened, was that I had a job test on a 10 inch sched 40 pipe. I did the Root pass, and the inspector wanted to see the root pass after every quarter was welded. Except, with stainless, you gotta weld it like lugnuts on a tire - you gotta jump all over the pipe to counter balance the pull. Anyways, I welded this thing; didn't have the hotpass on or whatever, but the Welding inspector was not happy with my Root Pass. He just said that they were looking for someone with more experience. (Which I found kind of funny, because they were trying to get the Superintendants son on as a Welder, and they just had the one position open)I dont know.. Must have been some super intense Code work or that I looked like I struggled for the Root?! I don't know. Someone pick apart my weld, and help me learn where I went wrong. Attached Images
Reply:Those are gorgeous roots my friend, is there a drug testing policy for these CWI's?
Reply:Thankyou very much for the comment, I thought I was losing my marbles!! lol You know what, I have an extremely strong feeling that it was something to do with there being only the 1 position that needed to be filled, and the issue with getting the superintendants son.. He was just starting out, the last I heard. Its just one of those 'who you know' kind of deals. But Geez, it can drop a guys self esteem to have that happen!!
Reply:Those roots look great..Its all who you know sometimes...I struggled on my last stainless weld it was on a 12'' sch 40, just thought id ask you how you run yours, what kind of heat, and how you run it compared to carbon, how you feed your wire, etc? I could use all the help i can get, and yours look nice.

Reply:Go back and ask to see the root that was better than yours from a "more experienced welder."
Reply:Only thing I see is you might not have purged it long enough for their liking, there is a good bit of color in there.Have we all gone mad?

Reply:Hey guys, I appreciate everyone getting back to me. The countless stories I've heard about guys losing out on opportunities, losing jobs, being replaced, being given lesser jobs - I'll quite often listen to how some Welders speak, work a room, or start up conversations, and some have the "Gift of the Gab".A Welder I worked with, charmed his way out of getting a Weld shot - And he just opened with a few humorous jokes, dropped a few names, asked about the family, then threw in not to get his weld shot - and was greeted with Welcome arms. It makes for a good story. Quite a popular guy; remembered. There was another time I was having small talk with a Welder at Work. The situation was that a different welder was having trouble welding a 'bad spot' (Obstructions, beams in way, other piping, lack of room, whatever the case was) The trouble however, was that the Welder was Right handed, this was a left handed side of the weld, and his Welding ability on his opposite hand wasn't up to ability.  The Welder I was talking to, being Right handed, but had equal ability with both hands, Went and did this "Hard to get in/Bad spot" With his Left hand. After the weld passed, the Welder whose Weld this was, was telling 'everyone' that The other Welder who had to weld the left handed side, was a "True Lefty" Which wasn't the case, but he was advertised as that. Ultimately, The Welder who had trouble shortly after was able to bring his Rig on for Rig rate - Whereas the Welder who had Skill with both hands, they eventually laid him off.
