I have a miller XMT304 with a 60 series wire feeder that is set up with .035 wire and 75/25 gas.  Can I use this for decent results on body panels and if so can you give some advice on settings?  Is .035 wire alright or should I go down to .030?  I would need a roll of wire and 4 drive wheels which I think are over 50 bucks so would like to stick with .035 but if I have to I can get the stuff to switch over to .030.The miller calculator says 180-220 IPM and 17-18 volts.  Any advice for not warping the thinner metal but still getting a decent weld.  I will do the tack every couple inches method.  I have mostly welded thicker square tubing and angle before so not much experience with thinner panels so any help or advice will be greatly appreciated!
Reply:I agree with 7A749.  0.030 wire would be ideal (for me) but your welding preferences may make 0.023 better (for you).
Reply:Thanks for the advice guys.  Can a 60 series wire feeder run .023?  It doesn't list it doing .023 on the miller website.  Is all I need for either size wire are the 4 wheels, or do I have to change anything else to make it work?7A749, can you PM me how much you want for a set of wheels in either size shipped to 54915.Thanks again guys.
Reply:ponch,The 60 feeder will push .023 with the proper drive rolls, however, depending on the length of your whip, you may have some problems. With a 15' whip, even if you swap out the liner with one designed for .023, you may have some issues pushing .023 for 15'.  You may want to look for a shorter whip just for the body work.  You may be able to pick up an M10 gun with a 10' whip on e-bay for cheap.  The smaller guns are much handier for body work than a 300A gun.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.
Reply:Thanks Sundownhill.  I have a magnum 400 gun that is 15' long and says it's for .035-.045 wire.  So looks like a gun would be needed also for .023 wire.   I'll see what comes up with drive wheels, might try a set of .030 drive wheels with the gun I have now.  Otherwise I will get .023 wheels and a new gun and between .023 and .035 should cover anything I need to weld.
