Well was babysitting for a few hours and didn't really know what to do with the kid really. Neighbours wanted a bit of time alone, so I offered ... not sure why I did ... but the kid was 8 and took him in the shop for a few hours. Taught him how to use the lathe, and a few hand tools. He was too scared to try welding. Used:2" Square tubing for the front sectionPerforated sheet that I had laying around for the grillAngle Iron for the back of the truckDid the wheels with a knurling tool on the lathe"axles" 1/4" round rodAxle Casing 1/2" Round tube3" Round x 10" Long Tubing for tankerExtra spring from exhaust bolt kit for the rear spring between tanker and axles.Tig welded the shape of the door, steps, and windshieldSheet Metal to cap the end of the tank and top of the truck. The front section is already painted with BBQ aluminium pain. The kit is going to color things to make them pop out more later on. He was very happy with it. This is what came out : Attached ImagesLast edited by dj55b; 01-17-2012 at 02:45 PM.

Reply:Very nice. When I was in the 7th grade we made our own metal trucks (mine was a lifted monster truck) and we spent the better part of the year laying out the sheet metal, soldering, welding, brazing, riveting, casting the wheels, turning and knurling the wheels. Looking back on the year we spent in that class... that project put us on ever single machine and process in the shop. My kids played hard with it and it was better than any Tonka. I had the truck until one day when it was left it in the drive way and I ran it over in the snow. I was sad (actually )... but the knowledge and skills learned from the project are still with me today. Good job.
Reply:Looks like a tanker truck to me. Watch out though, cause one of these days that kid may be after YOUR job. But seriously though, kids need someone to teach them how to do things besides play video games, watch TV and peck on a keyboard, theyll get enough of that elsewhere. Somebody will need to be here to make and fix things after we retire, and hopefully that won't be a bunch of illegal immigrants. Maybe you can instill a sense of wanting to do things with his hands. If he ever brings it back over you could add some exhaust stacks behind the cab.Last edited by Bistineau; 01-17-2012 at 03:41 PM.

Reply:That's cool!! Maybe you've started a future welder. I have an 11 year old granddaughter that loves to watch me build things but when things get noisy her hands cover her ears. Reply:Thanks for the compliments guys For never building anything like this before and not being into trucks myself, I thought it wasn't bad. Even the proportions seemed half decent for just quickly guess .... Uh I mean planning Nah don't think this kid will grow up to be a welder, a farmer more so. His dad has a chicken farm, and does wheat too I think. When I asked the kid what he wanted to build, he said a truck cause he wants to farm with it! Maybe should of put a door in the top of the tanker to get some cargo filled in there!
Reply:That's pretty cool. I guarantee you one thing, you made an impression on that kid that he will remember all his life. He might not have acted like it then, but he will think back on that time with you forever.
