Bumped about not getting into the class so I decided to stop at the store on the way home from work for some 1/8 stock to start practicing more on my own.1/8" mild steel. 1/16th orange, #7 gas lens. Some where done at 15cfh and then I bumped it to 20 and it made a nice difference I think. Some I had maxed out at 85 amps then some at 93 and some at 106. All metal was cut, then hit the bench grinder to clean up the ends. And my stone disc grew legs and walked away so I used a flap disc.Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer
Reply:No filler hereIs this ideally what it's supposed to look like? ^^ I decided since I couldn't really go past 106 without blowing a fuse I went really slow.A few are lap joints and I still think it's impossible to do these without any undercut. The easiest way and best results I got from doing this was having the metal straight up/down and flat and welded towards myself.Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer
Reply:yeah that last one and the one with the arrow looks better..keep at it..many start out cold and you can see where the piece builds up heat  and the dimes lay down..
Reply:Get rid of the 1/16 tungsten. Use 3/32.  Don't dab the filler, steel is not like aluminum and you don't havve too.  Lay your filler in the groove and run over it only feeding when you need more filler..  try that and see where it gets you. The welds look cold. In the last two pic they look a lot better though. Keep at it bud.
Reply:Any reason for 3/32? What is the general rule of thumb for switching sizes?Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer
Reply:I agree, try using 3/32 tungsten this will let you control your amps a little more, try setting your welder around 80-85 amps, also instead trying to tackle a butt joint, try doing pleated plates, cut a 4x6 or so coupon and just run bead after bead across the coupon, try to make them straight, consistant(cut two three at  a time and rotate to let them cool) and tied into the previuos bead. This is what we do for all process' in the welding class I'm in, then move to "lap" joint, then a "T" joint and finally a "butt" joint. That last pic right in the middle (without the undercut) is basically what you'r shooting for.Lincoln pro mig 180Lincoln Square Wave Tig 300/wp 20/home built water cooler Victor, Purox, Harris, O/A welding/cutting setupsVintage Craftsman drill pressVintage Craftsman/Atlas 12"x 36'' lathe7''x 12'' w/c band saw Everlast 140 st
Reply:As you can plainly see that removing the millscale does wonders now don't it..As mentioned you need more heat..Bigger tungsten...and slow down on your dips..Try to get smooth with the delivery of the filler and try to make the next bead the exact same size as the one in back of it..Adding the same amount of filler and a better..er...steadier pace will do you good..Practice is everything....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:you might consider putting steady paced music on in the background to help with keeping a consistent pace. you are showing signs of improvement as the pictures progress.Dynasty 200DXPassport plus w/ spoolmate 100victor 315c oxy/(act and prop)Miller digital elitemilwaukee power tools

Reply:your 16th tungsten is probably blowing apart tring to run that much amperage, which is blowing the tip of the tungsten apart, which is not allowing the electron flow to be focused, so your "loosing" amperage by having a blunt tungsten. if you switch to 3/32 you will have more control and wont be blowing it apart an creating tungsten inclusion. hell i use either on just about anthing anymore.tfgvhhfcxzrgggggggggg2hhbth ng ui,h ol , hmmm bnk , bb^^^^ thats what my 6 month old son has to say about it lol.pounding in papas laptop
