Hey guys,I have a quick question. What is the safe capacity of a S8 x 18.4 beam used in a gantry crane with a span of 11 feet? I put this crane together some time ago. So far I've made a max lift of around 1500 lbs. I was just wondering what the safe capacity of the beam is. Thanks!Syncrowave 250 DX (Watercooled)Millermatic 251Thermal Dynamics Cutmaster 101H

Reply:Looks like it but I don't know $h!t.
Reply:Coffing hoist gives a rated load of 2000lbs (this factors in the weight of the hoist already) on a 12.5' span s8x18.4 beam hoist that they make. The beam has a maximum yield that is much greater, With 1.5' less of a span the capacity will be higher. I would stick with a swl of around one ton.Cain's Mechanical LLC Southwick, MAwww.cainsmechanical.comRig:-2006 Chevy 2500 utility body-Lincoln Ranger 10-Miller Spectrum -Tons of hand and power toolsAWS D1.2 Structural Steel Certification
Reply:I've put together an analysis of your crane loading scenario.  Hopefully this will answer your question and help others to answer their own since this appears to be a popular topic lately. Attached ImagesWeldingWeb - Crane Beam Analysis.pdf (16.7 KB, 270 views)

Reply:Yeah, it's not just the beam, but what supports the beam, what those supports sit on, etc..."These instructions are at our present level ofknowledge. Legal requirements do not exist.Technical issues subject to change."_________________________________________Lincoln MIG PAK 180Lincoln AC-225
Reply:I'm with you guys. I never intended to or would load the crane anywhere near the limits shown in the analysis provided by Fegenbush. I have a diesel engine that weighs ~3000lbs that I need to lift using two (2 ton) trolleys/hoists. The distance between the trolleys will be ~60 inches. My crane is supported by 4" square, 1/4" wall steel tube. The vertical tubes rest on a pair of W8x18 (60" long) horizontal beams to which 3000 lb capacity (each) casters are attached. The overall height of the crane is 10'. Both the upper and lower horizontal beams are corner braced to control unwanted movement/stress. I suppose a picture would explain all the above better so I'll work on that this weekend.Until then, do you guys see a problem loading the crane?Syncrowave 250 DX (Watercooled)Millermatic 251Thermal Dynamics Cutmaster 101H
