Well, I've recently enrolled in welding school, I figure I'm pushing 30 and need a career, not just another job. What piqued my interest is, as a homebrewer looking to get into a proper brewery job, every company I spoke to said they need brewers as well as welders. I've been lurking a bit and soaking up what knowledge I can here, and have really enjoyed all the threads, stories, and pictures. I figure I'll swallow my pride and throw some of my first welds up here as well. These were all done with 7018, but something tells me y'all could guess that!Horizontal T Joint:Vertical upward T Joint:And today I tried my hand at my first 1G:Gotta work on my undercutting and travel consistency, but for a guy who has never welding a thing in his life, I think I'm off to a decent start.
Reply:not bad bud. on the weave though, its coldrolled like a mama. run stringers instead of a weave. other wise, looks like you have potential.
Reply:Looks pretty good for first welds. The welding class is paying off well. Be aware that if you do any welding for a brewery, things that come into contact with the product will need to be SS. So make sure you get some training in welding this material too.

Reply:Thanks for the replies. On the issue of stringers/weave motions, we haven't quite gotten there yet (been welding for about 4 days now), so I'm sure that technique will crop up soon. I think the instructor is really emphasizing the weave so as to get our stick control down. But, time will tell and I will learn!CroesiusTennessee Tech Center, learnin' the ropes.

Reply:On the last pic of 1g, I can see what looks like coldlap.   On the right side of the bead are little spots with wet toes.  The whole bead should look like that.  The rest of the side of the bead looks like the metal was rolled there instead of Fused with the base metal or Burned in.For weaves like that you need to run the welder hotter or keep a smaller puddle.I'm a home brewer too.  1/2 barrel all grain gravity  brewery.  (2) 7.5 gallon stainless conical fermenters.DavidLast edited by David R; 01-21-2012 at 12:00 PM.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
