One of my customers is selling work boots from trailers at the refinery's and had me modify 4 gas tanks that supply fuel for the generators....He bought tanks from Summit that had a couple fittings he didn't need and had me remove and cap them off......Good job for a morning work....Just pay me !  Miller Dynasty 350Twenty Six HammersThree Crow BarsBig Rock

Reply:I'm confused. What did you do exactly? It looks like you took a hole saw, made a hole, then took the hole and welded it back in?I don't get it.EDIT: I'm an idiot... It's a reading thing...Last edited by DiabolicZ; 03-11-2011 at 10:29 PM.
Reply:Hey B_C,What happened? Work slow down for you? I was real steady with winter repairs until 3 weeks ago & then it slowed down for me also. That was kinda handy as I could get caught up a bit with the crafts I do in the winter. Then, this morning, my 'ol boss(company I retired from last year), called me with a large fab job for him as he kept (3) accounts for his home side operation. Mmmmmm...nice $$$$. I called my steel supplier to order the material for a pickup Monday morning. I also got a call for my mobile rig to go to a large landscapers' garage to fix all the broken equipment from last years' hard usage by his employees. He's the first so far. It's about to start again with the upcoming landscaping businesses gearing up.BTW, those welds on those tanks are quite decent as they are "production" welds. They don't need the TIG artform for those. That's how costs are kept down with producing multiple pieces.DennyComplete Welding/Machine/Fab. Reply:Just read what I wrote down and it says what I did ? I removed two fittings and caped them off.........The caps are largerthan the hole saw I removed the fittings with so it serves as a cover, cut from another piece of plate....Last edited by B_C; 03-11-2011 at 11:36 PM.  Miller Dynasty 350Twenty Six HammersThree Crow BarsBig Rock
Reply:B_C, If you have a Bridgeport or any type of mill, you do not need the pilot hole to cut your plugs. Just hold the plate in the mill vice and slow speed and cut the slugs.T.J.www.tjsperformance.comDynasty 300 DXHTP 240HTP Microcut 380Hyperthem 85JD2 Hyd Bender and HF Hyd Ring Roller all in one =(Frankenbender)Bpt. Reply:Thanks for the "How I Did It" picturesI see pretty patches without stress point corners and only a small hole to plug.  Minimum investment in tools and equipment.  Bridgeports are nice, but they are big and expensive; in addition to being too heavy to load on a service truck.I offer three choices: Good, Fast, & Cheap. Reply:Looks good B_C. I will add something here. another way to to cut a hole with holesaw without the pilot bit is to grab a block of wood and first drill the hole with holesaw in the wood then pull the pilot bit out and clamp wood to workpiece and use that to hold the saw from walking. This is portable and works great. If you take time to make nice hole in the wood, you will have better results with the saw not wandering on the metal. Works fine to plug the hole but I thought I would just throw that out there.Millermatic 252Lincoln 175 plusTA 185tswTA 161stlhypertherm pmax 45Victor torchHenrob torchAn S10 for each day of the week
Reply:I just wanna know how you held the slugs in the hole to tack them without it falling into the tank.
Reply:hahahahaha I used the next size bigger hole saw (there larger) but if you had to there is a 1/4 " hole to put a metal screw in to hold it with some vise grips  Miller Dynasty 350Twenty Six HammersThree Crow BarsBig Rock
