Stainless Steel Cooling Chamber Repair..

Oh goodie goodie..Tomorrow I will have my hands full..Both ends were welded to the chambers and after 25 years they are all beat to shi+ and need replacing..The coolant tubes go thru the end pieces and are silver soldered to the chamber..The end pieces slide over them and then the ends are welded to the chamber...I have to remove the old welds and clean them all up and replace the ends with the new ends..The new end parts are pic 5..Pics below..One more time.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:First thing I needed to do is see if there are any leaks before dismantling..Tested at 55 LBS and yup I found one...But it has to be where the tubes are soldered in so....They have to be replaced also..I will not solder them I will weld them instead....I got myself 10 zip discs and tomorrow AM ..Let the repair begin!...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:I am curious how the stainless to the aluminum stood up.  Will you isolate to reduce corrosion or is it not a problem??  Or is it all stainless?  I have not seen so much white deposits on stainless before.Last edited by lotechman; 01-24-2012 at 05:58 PM.

Reply:Zap, When I grow up I wanna be just like you.  I love the cool stuff you get to work on and be creative.  Does any one ever tell you to do it a certain way or are you free to choose the best way yourself?   If you get to choose that would be the best job on the planet, just go to work and create for billable hours.  I'm jealous, but I started too late to catch up to you.  I can keep trying though. I am still pretty good for an old crippled dude.BobI'm spending my Kids inheritance, I dont like him that much anyway!!!!!!Enuff tools to do the job, enough sense to use em.Anybody got a spare set of kidneys?  Trade?

Reply:Those look like some kind of oil coolers, maybe hydraulic oil or motor oil. Did they come off a boat or barge of some kind? That would be my guess, they are submerged in water for cooling. That would explain the coating, of mysterious origins. When the hull was painted, those got a coat, too. Painters will paint anything that aint covered, and TRY to paint some things, even if it is covered. Have fun and enjoy yourself while doing the "all the Fun Jobs".

Reply:Well these were not as bad as I first thought they would be..One zip disc and a BFH and that was that..After I got the bars off I cleaned up all the old crap with a 60 grit flap wheel then it was weld time..Took about 5 hrs total to do the 2 chambers both ends..Pics tell the tale..New part and the old stuff..Bar removed..All cleaned up..Holes reamed .500..Rear..No holes...060 wall stainless tube .500 Dia.One more time.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Corner welds..Vert up..Welds done..Tube side..Rear..The tubes were welded with .045 309..The other welds were 1/16" 309...They did not want them welded all the way around so we just skip and hop here and there on the top and bottom..All corners welded.I get all the fun jobs..Oh yeah...NO LEAKS!!!!!...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
