Reply:I walked my arse off yesterday hunting for metal for a client in DC who is ex-Navy and needed something cool for his new, modern home. This is what I came home with. Should be really cool when I get through with it. That's what i did all day yesterday.  Atleast I hope you had a good saw, nice shop too.Last edited by Jimmy_pop; 01-11-2012 at 09:45 AM.

Reply:I'd put all the small pieces in a concrete mixer w/ some cold water laundry detergent or dove dish soap. Tumble for awhile, dump the water, refill w/ fresh water and tumble again w/ a hose running the mixer over to flush out all the soap.                                      MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw

Reply:For the past couple days I have been replacing pilot bearings on two 20 Cylinder General Motors EMD Engines that propel the ship I work aboard. Not much welding, just had to fix the bearing installation tool when someone tried using it improperly. The clutch is about 5 feet in diameter and the pilot bearing assembly alone must weight 100lbs. The nut I welded. Pretty old machine, just set it to what I thought would work and laid a bead. 1/8 7018The Port EngineSpacer Between torque tube and clutchThe clutch on the reduction gear pinion hubCain's Mechanical LLC Southwick, MAwww.cainsmechanical.comRig:-2006 Chevy 2500 utility body-Lincoln Ranger 10-Miller Spectrum -Tons of hand and power toolsAWS D1.2 Structural Steel Certification
Reply:I like that Jimmy. Post up what you end up doing with that. That "scrap" place looks like a neat place to root around at. It's dangerous enough when I get to a good heavy truck yard,  some place with aircraft parts would just be begging to go home with an empty wallet and a full truck of new "toys".No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Wow kb1ftx That's a good one.  So what wears out the 100# pilot bearings? Idling?--------------Yesterday was wedge and dog work, maybe I'll post that tomorrow.Part of today was "desperate man" beam straightening. Not too many "during" pictures, you know how hectic that can be, but you can at least see  the before and after.Yes, that's all the same beam. Now I just have to find that guy who bondos and paints old beams so they can be sold for new. Good Luck

Reply:Thanks men.The extreme straightening usually wouldn't be  worth the effort but we were one beam short from keeping twelve pieces  all matched.Good Luckspent the first half of the morning calling around looking to drum up some work waiting for the steel truck to show up.    Once it finally showed, cut 3 beams, fitted doublers, laid out and broached holes and tacked up all the steel for the inspector that showed up today.Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.
Reply:I got to work and knocked out a bunch of paperwork by 111am. Then I took my lunch break and got a book that I published for a friend of mine into Book People.... An Austin Indie bookstore.  Then I went back to work and thought about my weekend welding projects. Attached Images
Reply:No welding. Work a planned shutdown at a local plant. Just asked to change a bunch of worn out pulleys and belts. Then replaced wear strips on conveyors. A good change of pace.

Reply:Looks handy nikodell, for breaking new ground? Or is it a new way to trim toe nails? Or is it a BIG beer keg opener?    :PPiece of Pipe? Or a recycled shovel?M.
Reply:Rolled 16 gauge sheet, 16 gauge 1-1/16 tube and 1" oak dowel and I left a hint to its purpose. Angle on the spade shovel sucked and the normal square edge scoops suck and have bad handle angles.Last edited by nikodell; 01-12-2012 at 03:19 PM.

Reply:The bearing itself weights about 20 or 25 lbs, but the housing where the bearing rides makes up the rest of the weight. The bearings go bad from, just what you said, idling. We have to have the engines ready to go whenever the guys upstairs want to leave so a lot of times we are waiting with the engines running, but not clutched in.The boat is in a trade that doesn't allow for much down time for repairs so they are changed at the end of the year wether they are good or bad, because when they go it isn't pretty.Cain's Mechanical LLC Southwick, MAwww.cainsmechanical.comRig:-2006 Chevy 2500 utility body-Lincoln Ranger 10-Miller Spectrum -Tons of hand and power toolsAWS D1.2 Structural Steel Certification
