6" stainless thin wall.. 308l 3/32 rod with 3/32" gap65amp using foot pedalthought i would share a few pictures and ask a few questions..I'm really just learning how to weld stainless it seems pretty simple at 2g1.how far do you peel the tape back when putting the root in?2.when stopping the arc should i pull the arc to the bevel then gradually let off the pedal?rootinside root
Reply:Peel the tape back off of no more than 1 quarter of the joint. For 6" pipe, probably just 2 or 3" of the joint should be exposed, otherwise you'll lose all your back purge.Yes, drag the puddle onto the bevel before you break the arc.(not the cap pass) That way if you leave a shrinkage pore, it' won't penetrate through to the inside, and you'll weld overtop of it and melt the pore away on the later passes.Feather your tacks and restarts. Not sure, if your root photo has a shrinkage pore(hole) or if that's a glass deposit on the surface...Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector
Reply:i think its a glass deposit, that was only my second piece of 6" I really like this stuff :]

Reply:A DAB WILL DO answered your 2 ? But I got something to add about your prep on inside of pipe. Try not to grind with a hard disk in the manner you did. Take a flapper wheel (my preference) or tiger disc tand clean the oxide out with that. Those scars that a hard disc leave may give x-ray a false reading of cracks or other internal defects. Also feed your wire a little deeper into your gap for a little more penetration.
