I recently finished a staircase for a house http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=252641  The homeowner wants a base for his dinning table.  The top has already been built.  He wants the base to look like raw steel with the burns around the weld area.  My first thought was to do it in steel and clear coat it.  But I think unfinished stainless may be better.  I havent done a lot of stainless but I know that the blue burns come right of with a wire brush on a polished and brushed finish.  Will it come off or is there a way to make it more permanent. Reply:I have some blue and straw colors left on a stainless project I completed almost two years ago. It's exposed to twice daily pressure hose washdowns and weekly alkali foam washings and has not faded at all. At this point, I think I'll have to hit it with a fine grit flap wheel to get the heat tint out. I'd say the color will stay if you leave it alone.Lincoln Precision Tig 185Lincoln Power Mig 256Hypertherm PM 45Everlast 140STSmith O/A
Reply:Looking good there bud, if you go with stainless you could get some colors out of it by heating up up at certain places cause you know certain temperature bring about certain colors. have to watch distortion though but it looks like a sweet project!
Reply:I am going to do the project with steel.  Thanks to Matt at InnoFab Source I found a clear coat with a matte finish that can go on bare steel.Miller XMT 304 cc/cvMiller 12RC w/ 15ft Tweco #4 GunMiller 30A SpoolgunCustom Thermal Arc TA 10/270 Generator "Thermal Star"Smith oxy/acet-propane with weld, cut & rosebud tipsAnd of course grinders, chop saws, hand tools
Reply:you can also use 1 part minwax or floorwax1 part linseed oil1 part turpintineand a dash of japan dryyou melt the wax and pour it into the mixture of linseed oil and turpintinedouble boil it, so boil a pot of water and put a pot inside of that one.this provides a really nice looking raw metal finish, clear coats are ok but the crack and need to be stripped to fix.this type of finish you can re apply anytimeit works best if its done in hot weatherhttp://www.forgingtechnology.com/
