Hi everyone, a friend of mine runs a small restaurant and has asked if I could make a wine glass rack, the sort that fixes to the ceiling and the glasses hang upside down from, in my head it seems easy enough to make, probably from 1/4 inch round bar or something similar, but my question is how should I finish it? Would paint eventually mark the base of the glasses? I initially thought stainless but I'm guessing it would cost a fortune and that defeats the whole idea of building it instead of buying, so mild steel with some sort of paint/clear coat? Any help would be greatly appreciated
Reply:thanks tackit, that's what I was afraid of, it was just an idea but I was hoping it could be done cheap, I would be doing it labour free for him but as I said it's a small business and not pulling in a lot of cash at the moment, looks like the idea could be going out the window ha, thanks for your help
Reply:I would use just mild hot rolled steel for the glass holder.  Then, I'd heat it up with a torch in sections and slap on a hand held "mop" with lard on it.  Basically, blacken the piece like you're seasoning a BBQ.  Once its all burnt and blackened, it would look pretty sweet.  No paint chips to worry about.Lincoln Power Mig 216Lincoln AC/DC-225/125Miller  625 X-Treme PlasmaMiller 211 Forney 95FI-A 301HF 91110Victor Journeyman O/PMilwaukee DaytonMakita  Baileigh NRA Life Member
Reply:would this really work? is there any chance it would mark the glass at all? thanks for your reply
Reply:what ever cheapo metal you build it out of .. test if it will work,as in do the set up, glasses and all , working in the bar. mounted in place.... after the kinks ae worked out ...send it for a good powder coating!the old school me would suggest heavy nickel plating .  any way it will be rust on the glasses (which will scratch them too)me i would make it out of stainless .lol thenyou can reweld andnot worry about the finish.. to explain the cost ask how long he plans to be in business.if he says he might go with wood? lol tell him about dust and mold ..those might look nice but are a bitch to clean and fail often if the place is inspected
Reply:lol how big is it going to be ?? if he is selling that much wine? do it right!
Reply:it needs to hold around 50 glasses, the way the place is set up they have 4 glasses on every table, people come in and if they don't want wine (and most people don't)  they take the glasses away and have nowhere tidy to put them ha I actually was thinking wood as a cheaper option but now you have put me off that idea lol inspection isn't really a problem, things aren't as tight over here ha
Reply:I've seen several glass holders made out of plain forged steel.  I made a decorative wood stand for my moms outdoor fireplace and blackened it as I described earlier.  You have to play around with it to get the finish you like.  Yes, it does work.  You can also zinc plate it, followed by black powder coat.  Nickel plating would cost you a bundle and is unnecessary if you're putting a powder coat finish on top of the zinc.  It won't rust for the application you're calling for.Lincoln Power Mig 216Lincoln AC/DC-225/125Miller  625 X-Treme PlasmaMiller 211 Forney 95FI-A 301HF 91110Victor Journeyman O/PMilwaukee DaytonMakita  Baileigh NRA Life Member
Reply:Any kind of coating will wear off eventually and if they are putting up the glasses wet from rinsing you will get rust with mild steel.1. Use all stainless2. Use mild steel either painted or "blackened" with a stainless steel rod tacked on top where the glasses make contact.3. Attach a UHMW "teflon" plastic runner on top of the rack where the glasses make contact.4. Attach a piece of hardwood on top of the rack where the glasses make contact. (Check with Health dept. inspector)5. Coat the mild steel with epoxy resin, will last a long time before it wears through.6. Put some tape on top of the the rack where the glasses make contact. (electrical tape?)Thats all I've got for now."The reason we are here is that we are not all there"SA 200Idealarc TM 300 300MM 200MM 25130a SpoolgunPrecision Tig 375Invertec V350 ProSC-32 CS 12 Wire FeederOxweld/Purox O/AArcAirHypertherm Powermax 85LN25
Reply:thanks everyone for your help, I really appreciate it  "norite" what about plasti dip spray? pretty much spray on plastic...what do you think? or would it stick?
Reply:Plasti-dip is soft and sticky, not good to slide anything on.I second Super-arc's idea using heat and oil. You can use any food-grade oil, a bristle brush, and a propane torch. The finish is long-lasting and looks great. If any rust or wear shows up it can be re-finished easily.JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps
Reply:Don't forget rust or cold blue for metal finish. You can cheat on rust blue using a propane torch and a paper towel dipped in bluing.I think any finish will probably rust over sometime with mild steel though.  Tigging a 1/8" SS filler rod along the length of the top longitudinally for the glasses to slide on may work and be tons cheaper than going all stainless.  Btw, those are usually made of hollow brass tubing.  What do you think the weights gonna come in at with solid bar?Last edited by Drf255; 09-11-2013 at 05:01 AM.TA Arcmaster 300CM3XMT 304S22P12 suitcase feederX-Treme 12VSOptima pulserTA161SMaxstar 150STLHypertherm PM45OP setupStihl 020AVP, 039, 066 Magnum
Reply:I hadn't actually put too much thought into that part, I was trying to figure out if it could be done easily to try help a friend, but by the sounds of things its just not as easy as I thought it would be so I think its going to be put on hold for now
Reply:howabout something that is half wood and half stainless ? if you make the rack wider you can cut down the weight put on the rods. and go thinner . the side away from where you slide the glasses in you use two pieces of wood . one you drill all the holes for spacing the rods and countersink alittle to accept say a washer it don't have to be stainless as it will sandwhiched between the 2 pcs of wood the 2 peices of wood braided, glued and sanded together will look as a solid piece.the side that the glasses slide into you are going to have to make a 'T' both in the material holding the rods (upside down ) to hold the rods between the rows of glasses you can use bent sheet metal (or wood ) or make a 'T' from the rod and use a washer as you did before to hang it from the main body....you could use plywood if you can find a nice finish for the side you see
