I was watching rural Tv the other day and I spotted a super simple log splitter that some guy built and it was supposed to be posted on there website but I can't find it It looked like it was just a few 4in square steel tubes welded with a chunk of square tubing that slides across it. I have the hydraulic cylinder and a possible source for the square tube I just need an idea of how the guy set up the slide and did the quick attach plate.

Reply:Dunno if this is the style you are talking about.  I have seen these in action and JEEZ are they slick!  The operator can pick up a stump and start munching away.  http://www.woodsplitterdirect.com/30...er-attachment/RogerOld, Tired, and GRUMPYSalesman will call, Batteries not included, Assembly is required, and FREE ADVICE IS WORTH EXACTLY WHAT YOU PAY FOR IT!Dial Arc 250HFThunderbolt 225 AC/DCAssorted A/O torches
Reply:The google link is useless...Rog the link you posted isn't exactly what I saw but they have one similar called a tire to tire splitter but it still isn't exactly like the one on Tv. The one on Tv was made with two sections of 4x4 square tube about a foot apart with a section of tube slightly larger than the 4x4 which acted as the slide and had the wedge mounted to it. The episode I have on my DVR is episode 127 of Successful farming machinery show with an air date of 02-07-13. The one thing I really liked about the unit this farmer built is that he can roll it down to grab a log and curl it back so a helper has a little area to process smaller chunks.http://www.woodsplitterdirect.com/30...-log-splitter/

Reply:A friend of mine fabbed one up for his backhoe. It's basically like a horizontal engine driven splitter but upside down and powered by the on board hydraulics vs a separate engine. He can manipulate a pile of cut-to-length logs and just rolls and nudges them into alignment with the ram and splits them into the desied size. I've seen other videos with skid steers and they are pretty slick. I burn wood but can't justify the cost over and above the 28 ton vertical/horizontal unit I already have. I use a kubota tractor to pull it around and to move logs.
Reply:I want one of these.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:I found ONE and only ONE photo of the unit but I still cant seem to find more photos and pausing my DVR isn't helping deconstruct the design. The photo of it is listed as Farmer built skid steer log splitter from a Wisconsin farm but there is not one thing more about it.http://www.agriculture.com/successfu...10_540-sl29703

Reply:However the slide is designed you want the wedge on the end of the cylinder and a stop plate on the end of the beam. If the wedge is at the end of the beam you will have to back up the skid steer as you split as it will push the log away from you. If the wedge is on the cylinder the log doesn't have to move as you split, plus with some "stops" on either side of the wedge it will let you unstick the wedge when the cylinder is retracted.
Reply:That is subjective and you will hear arguments for either way.  In fact, one of the big arguments for putting the wedge on the end of the beam is you won't have to worry about sticking the log on the ram.  You also won't have to back the skidsteer away, the split log will just push off the end of the splitter. In the following video, he splits wood at about 3:26.  All that being said, mine has the wedge on the ram because that's what I copied.  The nice thing about the skidsteer mounted splitter is that you can use the machine to drag the logs off of the ram if they do stick.  If I did it again, I'd put the wedge on the end of the beam though. Here is a nice design.    This one is what I basically copied for mine without the hood around the ram: http://www.skidsteersolutions.com/Sk.../et-lsi-37.htm
Reply:A pair of "stops" mounted on either side of the ram will strip the stuck log off of the wedge when the ram is fully retracted.
