I first posted about this 1944 machine in this thread..... before I bought it....... http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=74331Well, Now I own it. Today I worked on cleaning it up a bit. Things like getting the two ports that stuck out of the holes more secure. The Ground.... for example.... was held on by some weed eater cord..... and the 120 amp slot was just hanging out there.....And lots of dauber nests in those holes.......Here is a pic of what it looked like before I started.... for those who didn't bother with the link above...... Attached Images
Reply:The first thing I wanted to do was to get those two ports more secure so that I could use them better. I used stuff I had laying around....... The 120 amp plug got the use of some part off of my daughter's Radio Flyer. It was the biggest Washer I had, so I drilled it out, hammered it flat, and screwed it on. It works well enough. The Ground plug..... I managed to keep some screws from something I had years ago. I remember my wife asking why I was bothering keeping those screws.......... well.... apparently I was keeping them to hold the ground plug into an old 1944 welding machine. Here are a couple picture of my home made repair job...... Reply:I also took off the top box to check it out. I think the top box is a DC rectifier to make this AC Arc welder go to DC. I"m not sure. Hoping someone here can tell me what it really is. The stuff attached in the top box are screwed into a piece of wood. There is one thing in there that I thought..... hopefully.... was an old Whiskey Flask....... but since it was screwed down.... I figured it was a capacitor..... I was bummed......And another dauber nest..... Attached Images
Reply:Naturally I took the bottom unit apart so I could fix the two ports that were not secured. Here are a few pics of that process. I used a Sharpie to mark the Black wire and White wire for the top box with a "B' and a "W"........ so I could re-wire it the same way I found it...... Attached Images
Reply:looks like a high-frequency unit on top. That old cap might not be any good. You might write down the values on it if you can still read them, incase it blows up.That old machine has a lot of points for style !!
Reply:I cleaned out the holes so they are now clean. I also cleaned up the makers plate. Here' the last pic for the thread.I am working on getting the necessary 220V installed in the garage and the leads replaced so I can use this new welder on a regular basis..... Attached Images
Reply:I would love to find something like that someday. I would rather have that than a brand new Harbor Freight POS anyday. So much more character and I'm sure the quality is better. Great find and keep us posted on your results.CERTIFICATIONS:7018M- H.V.O10718M- H.V.O11018M- H.V.O9N10- H.V.O71T-1-HYM- H.O.V100S1 PULSE ARC 0,035- H.O.V100S1 PULSE ARC 0.045- H.O.VER70S-3 PULSE ARC 0.035 H.O.VER70S-3 PULSE ARC 0.045 H.O.VER5554- H.O.V
Reply:You're gonna love that ol' thing especially if the rectifier works good. Just curious, is the feeler gauge still there for point adjustment?                                               MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw

Reply:Very Cool Welder ! When you get done using it some day, you can then donate it to the Smithsonian. It may never quit working ! Post pic's when you get it all cleaned up and run a few beads.
Reply:Like tiger says it seems to be a hi freak unit on top.  with a little help you might do TIG,  .  Mac
Reply:Nice unit with a cool art deco look. It could pass as a superhero with that big M across it's chest!  Good score, it should last for the rest of your lifetime and your kid's and your grandkid's, too. A little bit of maintenance will go a long way with that 'ol girl, a bit of an interior clean and a few bits of heavy-duty shrink tube and Burndy (self iadhesive) tape to help solidify the insulaton. Get a new cap, most likely that old one is dried out, then it's time to scratch up on your TIG skills, at least the wife knows what your new mistress is, though she may not appreciate the elictricity bills.   I enjoy your posts, Fexal, keep 'em coming. Reply:Today I finished building a cart with casters for this beastly machine. I needed a way to move it around since it weighs so much. I build a little skid for it and stuck a little thing to hold the leads too. I still have the old leads in a dismantled fashion while I get new ones. I have 220 in my garage now. I just need the new leads and I'll be ready to post some pics of the thing in action. In the mean time...... here is my welder on wheels: Attached Images
Reply:Looks good !!!   Plugs and sockets look like Forney parts , maybe Forney built it ??  They are still in busness .  Does it work ?  Next paint away .   John
Reply:Today I made another step forward, and a half step backwards.I got some brand new #1 leads.... 2 ten foot sections........... (I should have gotten the 20' I originally planned.)I took the leads to my CE course today looking for help from the instructor. I needed help getting the new leads connected to the copper plugs that go into the "M" on the machine.  He immediately looked at my parts and said...... "What"...... "What".........I let him know this is 1944 technology. I need to solder the leads into the copper ends (those are the parts the plug into the machine). Again, he scratched his head and said "WHAT?"I started losing confidence and feeling stupid. He then grabbed some flux and proceeded to weld my $3/foot lead into the copper end. I was initially impressed because he is the expert and I'm the student.I said something like...... couldn't I just put my 50/50 solder in the copper end piece and just stick the lead wire in there and let it cool? He chuckled. I did it my way. Three times, once for each of the other three pieces that I originally needed help with...... It was nice and clean.Later..... his weld broke and lead pulled out. I had to fix it after class at home.......That's the long way of saying that I now question my instructor......Last edited by Fexal; 02-04-2012 at 10:06 PM.
