hey now.im trying to get everything in order with what i want. i have a thermal arc 95s for little stuff, i have access to 220v+ welders at my union hall. im weighing in the pro's and con's of acetylene vs oxy-acetylene for brazing.  when is a situation where i would want to braze instead of weld using bronze. im not talkng about silver soldering/brazing or aluminum brazing, im talking brazing with bronze or other materials when regular acetylene just wont do.  with brazing, if im using o/a is there a limit as to how thick i can go?i was trying to think of times id need a torch hot enough to braze with bronze and every time i think of an application i think to myself "yeah but id just weld that"the grand ol' opry aint so grand anymoremiller maxstar 150sworking on an oxy/acet set up
Reply:I thought I understood your question from the title, but then I got confused. You can braze delicate things that you don't want to heat to welding temperature, and can join dissimilar materials. You can braze and weld with the same torch and tips.Obviously we're not talking about a cutting torch. If you can get the workpiece up to temp you can braze it.

Reply:Cast iron is another place braze is pretty handy.   I just repaired a cast lead screw nut from some sort of special  saw that the local truss shop has.    I brazed a piece of 1 X 1 key steel to the side of it to repair it's original mounting bolt holes.   Like someone else posted disimilar metals.IF IT WORKS, DON'T FIX IT2 Lincoln CV-300 / LN-7 GMALinde-VI 253,400 & 450 w/MIG35 feedersCNC Table with Oxweld O/A & Hypertherm 1250G3Lincoln Ranger GXT 250Hobart-MicroWire 300ESAB Heliarc 161ESAB-Mobilemaster 2 CC/CV Feeders& more
Reply:One other thing that may be confusing you is terminology. Strictly speaking, "brazing" refers to a process where the parts fit together really, really well and the filler is "sucked into" the joint by capillary action...almost like soldering copper pipe fittings. On the other hand, "braze welding" is where the fitup isn't as good, and there are larger layers of the bronze filler. Both methods are used when you don't want to raise the parent material up to welding temperature (~2500°F). They can also be used to join dissimilar materials that cannot be welded.
