hey now.i spoke to my land lady today. shes not to hot on the whole oxy/acet thing. she told me she doesnt mind me welding at all, doesnt mind me using a little torch but the big tanks are just too risky. so it looks like im stuck using small oxy/mapp or oxy/prop for brazing. so looks like little davey is just gonna do his original plan with one difference...original plan:2 smith regulators for disposable tankssome kinda little torch along with an aw1anew plan:2 smith regulators for disposable tankssome kinda little torch along with an aw1aplasma cutter look i know its gonna be expensive to use little tanks for brazing. but it is what it is. theres not much i can do in this department. she doesnt want an mc size tank outside. so what am i gonna do you know?the grand ol' opry aint so grand anymoremiller maxstar 150sworking on an oxy/acet set up

Reply:Here ya go, with pics to prove it works:http://www.chaski.org/homemachinist/...=87931&start=0Oxygen concentrators are attached to MANY old folks and most of them don't light up.  Buy a 5lb propane cylinder instead of the big BBQ jug. 5-lb cylinders are more expensive, but they don't scare folks and are quite small. The propane jug has a CGA-510 fitting so the regulator will work on bigger cylinders in the future. An MC acetylene cylinder is quite small too.
Reply:Originally Posted by DSWDo you realize just how small a MC cyl is? Mine is about 2" taller than a standard screw on propane cyl and maybe 3/4"-1" wider at most. (I'd post the picts but the new computer doesn't have the photo stuff loaded yet.) I had to sit them right next to one another to tell the size difference. Granted a 20 cf O2 cyl is a bit bigger, but I propably could hide both in a 5 gal bucket with a lid.I understand what you say your landlord will accept, but it sounds like you are making mountains out of mole hills or just looking for an excuse to do what you've already decided.
Reply:The set up shown in the link is what my wife uses in her glass studio (for melting/forming glass).  The oxygen concentrator falls a bit short of reaching the oxygen supply that I normally use for cutting steel but might be better than nothing for your situation.  I know the concentrator has paid for itself in oxygen refills in the last couple of years.  There is a lot of potential in that combination.Larry "I feel for the man who cannot spell a word more than one way."  by Mark TwainLincoln AC225-SLincoln Weldpac 100 Miller Matic 180 (auto set)Miller Spectrum 375 ExtremeMiller Spoolmate 100Victor Super Range II

Reply:Originally Posted by DSWShin high would be a "B" size acet and maybe a 40cf or 60cf O2. ( I just got a "small" O2 in that range free and haven't swapped it yet because I have larger/less expensive cyl to use so I can't say size exactly)You really don't make much sense with a lot of these posts. You don't have 220v, you live in an apartment, your land lady has issues with some of all this, and now you want a plazma?! Have you given any of this any thought? Done any research? 110v plasmas are great for sheet metal. I know several guys who do duct work that swear by them, several that do stainless work exclusively, but thats really what they are for. Also have you given thought to what size compressor you will need? How dry you need the air to be?  The Hypertherm Powermax 30 needs 4scfm at 80 psi. Thats more than most small compressors put out. They need VERY dry air, about the dryness you need to do top quality spray gun work. Filters for this add to the cost. Also they list it pulling 26 amps on 110v, we are back to that pesky input power issue again to get full use.  And you still need to run the compressor at the same time. Do you have 2 seperate dedicated lines you can use at the same time?Millers Spectrum 125C  plasma lists max cut at 1/8" and includes the compressor. It still draws a full 20 amps on 115v, something most homes are not equiped with those dedicated 20 amp outlets except in special locations like the kitchen.Just WHY do you NEED a plasma? I can think of better, cheaper, smaller ways to do most of this. It just takes longer and isn't as fancy.
Reply:and as you were saying about dry air....look i do construction. i have a "make it work" attitude. i cant control the weather. but i remember when i rocked a ceiling and there was a leak from a pipe on the floor. we cut the rock out that got wet but the room was just flooded. it was hot as hell. muggy too. is the taper not supposed to tape the ceiling because the conditions arent perfect? he put on his "go-go gadget leg" stilts and taped what he could on the ceiling.sometimes in a not so perfect world, i might only have a 120v machine and need to cut 3/16. so ill make 2 passes! 3 passes! (im being sarcastic. basically im gonna have to make 2 passes one on top one on bottom and clean it up)...but for my use its not that big of deal. hell ive been offroading and stood with a bunch of guys forming a wall blocking the wind so  guys could mig weld. make it work.Last edited by outlawskinnyd; 04-11-2011 at 12:23 AM.the grand ol' opry aint so grand anymoremiller maxstar 150sworking on an oxy/acet set up

Reply:I have a miller 375 xtreme that I run on both 110 and 220 and it cuts up to 5/16 great on 110 and I have cut quite a bit of 3/8 on 110 when I needed it. I have only popped a 20a breaker a couple of times with it on extended cuts with a light plugged into the same circuit. On 220 I have cut thicker than 1/2 and it aint pretty but it can do it it just takes some time. Air is the biggest hurdle but I ran mine off of an 8gal wheelbarrow type construction compressor for several years without a problem I just had to stop and let the compressor catch up every couple minutes (this was a 110 compressor on the same circuit too). I dont think he'll have any trouble running what he wants on a regular 110 circuit as long as he can let his compressor catch up.
Reply:Dave, why not use Oxy/Propane like the barbecue tanks you see in front of every grocery and keep the real purpose of the BBQ cylinder to yourself.  Way safer and less intimidating to your land lord since they have seen those tanks for years.  Sooner or later you will get a TIG and the Argon tank will appear and you will have to explain that that is inert gas that doesnt burn and all of that stuff.  Sounds like a way out and since there is an acetyline shortgae looming an alternative fuel gas may be the cheapest most reliably available way to go anyway.BobI'm spending my Kids inheritance, I dont like him that much anyway!!!!!!Enuff tools to do the job, enough sense to use em.Anybody got a spare set of kidneys?  Trade?

Reply:thanks guys for all the help.im gonna talk to my land lady's bf see if theres anything that can be done.saving up money to move would mean having to buy a house. i dont have that kinda money. like i said if i really need to do heavy duty stuff id go to my cousins. but for little things i need to do for my tuck etc and projects i thought an oxy-fuel set up would be overkill. im gonna give it some time before i do anything. im not going on impulse.the grand ol' opry aint so grand anymoremiller maxstar 150sworking on an oxy/acet set up

Reply:i just got an email...she's cool with it. she saw me taking out my garbage and she saw me working on my truck today and she said she knows times have been tough on me, and she knows im safe with the stuff so as long as they are small tanks its ok DDDDDDi got certified thrugh my union for light gauge (spare me the light gauge certification jokes, i make my own up because in my field of work a light gauge will get you nowhere) and i also got an oxy-acetylene cert (which again, spare me the jokes because i make my own up...im certified with oxy-acetylene, that means i know everything not to do and a little of what to do because they spend so much time on what not to do) so she said its ok...i remember i needed to cut a bolt off a concrete wall at work and someone was using the gas saw so when my foremen said "hey kid come here....go cut the wall off with this torch...you know how to use it" and i said "yeah make sure to point it at the concrete, ignite with a lighter and if i hear a popping noise it means the weasel has arrived (pop goes the weasel) with the news the groundhog saw didnt see his shadow and we have to deal with 6 more weeks of this **** weather"he laughed and said "im gonna miss you after today"thats when i thought i was getting laid off and he said "hahaha come on go cut and dont let anyone see you i dont wanna deal with the iron workers today"i started to go, turned around and yelled "wait...."and he said "no your not getting laid off, but if you dont hurry up you will"i dont know what that has to do with anything, guess im just excited...yayyayayaya!the grand ol' opry aint so grand anymoremiller maxstar 150sworking on an oxy/acet set up

Reply:I can not argue with the landlady not wanting gas welding cylinders stored on her property.I own some rental property and more than a couple of times I have had to take an unpopular stance with a tenant or prospective tenant because of the requirements of my insurance carriers.  Insurance companies want to minimize their risk, and have blanket requirements for all thier policy holders.  If you have more than the average risk, you can expect to pay a higer premium.I offer three choices: Good, Fast, & Cheap. Reply:Check on renters insurance and see if it will cover you having a torch set up and if it does talk with the hot grandma about your getting it for coverage.
Reply:Well if your in an area that is work soft then look at area's that have more solid work if your worried about financial stability and paying for a mortgage.  In many places a monthly rental payment is equal to a monthly mortgage payment and some times the mortgage payment is less.
